Cory and Eric aren't very excited bout this years father-son softball game. Not wanting to hurt Alan's feelings, they try to find a way out. s the excuses pile up, Alan begins to realize what's really going on. He tells the boys that the game was cancelled because the organizers couldn't generate enough interest.

At school, Cory finds out from Topanga that was the game not cancelled; but the Unicorn Rainbow bookstore handed The Market Giant and embarassing defeat. Cory and Eric feel terrible and organize a barbecue dinner for just the three of them. Alan is happy to spend time with his sons; but he knows why they are doing it and still feels a little down. Cory and Eric realize that they haven't been showing their father enough appreciation and encourage Alan to organize a rematch against Unicorn Rainbow; one which Market Giant wins handily.

Meanwhile, Cory's class debate the necessity of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Cory argues that it's a sign of respect and pride.
