In his first appearance in Stargate Atlantis he is seen talking to a fellow soldier who bears the Serbian flag on his arm, and he is conversing with him in what appears to be fluent Serbian. This was never explored further in the series, but it could have been a nod to Boyan's Yugoslavian heritage.
