Brandy sued for $50M

Singer-actress rammed into the back of a car December 30, sparking a four-car crash that left one woman dead.

Authorities have not yet determined if Brandy will face criminal charges stemming from a fatal crash she was involved in last December, but the parents of the woman killed in the crash aren't waiting to find out.

The parents of 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj, who was killed in the four-car freeway crash that started when Brandy's SUV rammed into the back of her car, filed a $50 million wrongful-death lawsuit yesterday, claiming the singer was driving recklessly when her Land Rover struck the back of Aboudihaj's Honda.

"The accident was a terrible tragedy, and Brandy's heart goes out to Awatef Aboudihaj's family," spokesman Allan Mayer said in a statement. "But for legal reasons we cannot comment on this lawsuit."

The suit was filed on behalf of Aboudihaj Ahmed and Labridi Zohra in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The filing occurred one day after the California Highway Patrol recommended Brandy be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the December 30 accident. The city attorney's office is reviewing the case.

Brandy--real name Brandy Norwood--has publicly expressed condolences to the victim's family, and early media reports of the crash cited witnesses who claimed the singer took the blame for the crash at the scene of the accident. Police have ruled out any mechanical failure in the crash and determined that drugs or alcohol were not involved.

Brandy, 27, was driving on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles on December 30 when traffic slowed and her vehicle hit Aboudihaj's, a CHP report said.

Aboudihaj's car hit another vehicle, slid sideways into the center divider, and was then hit by another car, the report said. Aboudihaj, a Los Angeles waitress, died at a hospital from blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner's office.

How sad, but when you hit someone from behind it generally means that you were travelling too close to properly control the car. $50 million is another story though. I believe that a person can sue for any amount they want to but what they deserve and what they get are 2 different stories. This amount seems steep to me. It'll be interesting to see how much they actually get.

I can't imagine how hard this must be for Aboudihaj's family right now but how can they sue Brandy claiming she was driving recklessly when they weren't even there?

This is too funny. Pranalla writes: "I think Wrongful death lawsuits should not apply to accidents when there was nothing negligent or malicious leading to the death."

First of all, when you hit someone from behind, it's automatically YOUR fault because you didn't keep the distance. Second, she was driving recklessly according to several witnesses, which to me means VERY NEGLIGENT. Third, what you people seem to miss is that PUNITIVE DAMAGES are inflicted according to the income of the person who is being sued, so of course she won't be charged with the same amount of Average Joe because she DOES NOT HAVE Average Joe's income otherwise there would be no punishment in that.

Last but not least, you people are not objective at all because you are her fans, had it been some actor or singer that you despise you would all be jumping up and down of joy. Argue as much as you like but you know I'm right.

She killed the person in front of her and she should be held responsible like everyone else would, no special treatment becasue she is famous.

You know, Brandyjo, this may be the case or not, but I've seen people collecting money in cases like this one and then giving it to non-profit organization for social help. I'm sure Brandy can spare $50 million as much as I can spare $5.
As for "what's their excuse?" - Brandy killed somebody, their daughter, I think that's valid enough "excuse"

That is so stupid, what is their excuse? The money will help take the pain away? What happened to money doesn't buy happiness. I think they are more worried about getting their money then mourning their daughter.

there is no reason to pay 50 million dollars if it was anyone else it wouldn't have been such a big thing some people jus like to take advantage of other and it's wrong.

Accidents happen. And unfortunately a woman lost her life. But that doesn't entitle her family to sue for $50M. Even if charges are filed and Brandy pleads guilty or no contest, she should not have to pay any money to the deceased's family. I think Wrongful death lawsuits should not apply to accidents when there was nothing negligent or malicious leading to the death.

I hope that she doesn't settle this out of court, because that will just lead to more people filing the same kinds of lawsuits in the future.

People are so money hungry these days it's pretty amazing. It's really sad that someone lost their life and it shouldn't be taken lightly but they are called accidents for a reason. What is a ton of money really going to do to help the family?

I don't think she should face any charges, & I do not think the parents should get any cash from Brandy. No cash can compensate for the loss of a child. Having said that 50 million that is silly no one is worth that much dead.

This is ridiculous. It's no secret that she is only getting sued this enormously high amount because she is famous. She may have ACCIDENTALLY started the ACCIDENT, but if you can sue her for that, why not sue the ACTUAL person who hit her and killed her? It was just as much an ACCIDENT for them. I hope the court system doesn't fail us in common sense this time.
