- Bryant found himself in hot water when, in late August of 2006, he criticized then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Player Union President Gene Upshaw. He likened Upshaw to Tagliabue's personal pet and said that, because of that relationship, the NFL players didn't have the kind of guarantees that other professional athletes do.(edit)
