Notes

add »
The last scene between Spike and Buffy was rewritten and reshot by Joss. He felt, in the original draft, it did not show enough emotions between the characters and also thought it was time Spike told Buffy his soul was returned and how. (edit)
The German girl wears a shirt with a skull of a bird or something. There is a german punk rock band named "Die toten Hosen" that bares such a symbol. (edit)
The German sentence "Von der Tiefe verschlingt es" makes little to no sense for a native speaker because "Von isn't the correct translation for "From" in this case.
For the German dubbed version they used "Kommt aus der Tiefe, dich zu verschlingen" which something like "Comes from the deep to devour you", which is not quite right but better than the sentence from the song. (edit)
The song that can be heard during the scene in Germany contains the lyrics: "Von der Tiefe verschlingt es", which is German for: "Beneath you it devours". (edit)
Kaarina Aufranc portrays the third "Nancy" in the history of Buffy. The other two are the White Hat from "The Wish" and the smart girl in Buffy's English class in "Earshot". (edit)

Quotes

add »
Nancy: Is your girlfriend always this commanding?
Xander: Who? Oh Buffy? Yeah she's a girl...and a friend, but she's not my "girlfriend".
Dawn: Uh Xander, you got a bit of drool there. (edit)
Buffy: You come back to town, you make with the big surprises… twice. I don’t know what your game is, Spike, but I know there’s something you’re not telling me.
Spike: You’re right. There is. But we’re not best friends anymore so too bad for me. I’m not sharing. We’ve been through things. The end of the world and back. Now I can be useful ’cause, honestly, I’ve got nothing better to do. Make use of me if you want. (edit)
Xander: Please, outside of drugs, and violence, and unwanted pregnancy, and, uh, unleashing of hordes of Armageddon that comes pouring out of the school's foundation every now and then... what trouble could these kids have? (edit)
Nancy: No way! Are you saying that that thing was Ronnie?
Anya: You wish it, I dish it; I thought we were clear on this! I didn't know you would go and narc on me!
Buffy: You wished your ex was a worm?
Nancy: Well... we were just... talking... (edit)
Dawn: Spike. You sleep, right? You, vampires? You sleep?

Spike: Yeah, what's your point?

Dawn: Well, I can't take you in a fight or anything, even with a chip in your head. But you do sleep. If you hurt my sister at all, touch her, you're gonna wake up on fire. (edit)

Trivia

add »
When Buffy mentions her work at the Doublemeat Palace, Principal Wood says that he is a vegetarian. Ironically, in the episode Doublemeat Palace (6x12), Buffy finds out that the "meat" they use is actually processed vegetables. (edit)
In the scene where Buffy is walking through the graveyard looking for Spike there is a gap between 2 tall trees in which you can see the top af a tall (unlike Sunnydale) building with a large red light sign. I would think that such a building and sign would be found off the back lots of a tv studio. (edit)
In the scene with the car they talk about Anya being a demon again and her dealing with scorned women at the Bronze. So... they've been okay with her doing hideous vengeful wish-curses on men up until this episode? Granted, she apparently hasn't been very successful at the torturous agony part, but she does almost get folks killed with her worm-curse this episode so it seems kinda short-sighted of them. (edit)
In the beginning when Spike is going after the rat you can see his reflection on the file cabinet on his right side (left side from our point of view). (edit)

Allusions

add »
Principal Wood: ...you're not here to be their friend. Trust me, you open that door and these students will eat you alive.
Buffy: You heard about Principal Flutie, right?

Buffy is referring to the fact that Principal Flutie was fairly lenient with his students, tried to be their friend, and in the episode The Pack (1x06) he was actually eaten alive by students who were possessed by hyenas. (edit)
Visual: The Slugoff Demon both looks and moves like the "Graboid" monsters in the movie series "Tremors." Both are said to be ancient predators, though Spike mentions that the Slugoff Demon went extinct during the Crusades. (edit)
Spike: Hey, is that it? A little touchy-feely, and you're off to the Batpoles?
Inveterate TV watcher Spike refers to the campy TV 1960s series Batman. Whenever trouble called, millionaire Bruce Wayne (Adam West) and his ward Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) would turn into Batman and Robin by sliding down the Batpoles (hidden behind a bookcase in a Wayne Manor library room) into the Batcave, somehow becoming clothed in their superhero tights and masks in the process. (edit)
Visual: Opening Sequence
The opening chase scene may be an homage to the German film Run Lola, Run. The girl with the bright red hair, the industrial music in the background, and (most tellingly) the location is very similar.

This could also be a homage to the TV show Alias. In the pilot of that show the character of Sydney Bristow dresses up in a similar outfit. (edit)
