  • A humanitarian at work

On March 15, 1971, Private Billy Dean Smith, an African American Soldier fighting in Vietnam, was charged with killing two lieutenants and wounding a third one with a fragmentation grenade that exploded in the Officers' barracks in an Army artillery unit. The only evidence the Army had was a single grenade pin found in Private Billy Dean Smith's pocket. Burt Lancaster helped pay for his defense. He gave his lawyers $3000 to hire ballistics experts to testify in court. Private Smith was was acquitted on all charges.
