Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is the brainchild of Mark Schultz, who originally created the series in comic book format under the title Xenozoic Tales in the year 1986. The television series came to be through the marketing of Marvel Comics, when (years later) the company had acquired the rights to the property and attempted a revival of the popularity it once held in comic format.

The series followed the exploits of survival-savvy garage mechanic Jack Tenrec, (who had a passion for restoring classic car shells, mainly those of Cadillacs) and his often-reluctant companion, the lovely foreign ambassador Hannah Dundee (who hired Jack as a liason while she attempted to create clear communication between her land and the modern civilization) as they confronted serious issues facing the futuristic environment that they (and the rest of humanity) had come to inhabit alongside many dinosaurs that were long thought to be extinct.

Jack, leading his crew (a band of ecological freedom fighters known as the Mechanics), squared off against opposition in the form of the Council of Governors, the tyrannical Wilhelmina Scharnhorst and her nefarious henchmen among others.

The show dealt with many strong ecologicial (one major focus was the question of how the dinosaurs managed to re-emerge after they were thought to be extinct) and political issues that were central to the plot development. As a result of that coupled with the placement amidst a programming schedule that consisted of shows mainly geared toward a younger demographic, it went virtually unnoticed.

This show boasted superb animation and was surprisingly well-written. Many fans who can remember viewing it note the superior quality as one of the reasons they first started to enjoy the short-lived series.

In total, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs lasted for one full season (13 episodes) and was never considered for renewal.less «

  This series was extremely well written--especially compared to the mishmash of semi-literate detritus it was set amidst on Saturday morning. It would have been better programming to put it on the sci-fi channel. hide « show »

  I found this series to be innovative and entertaining. It was thoroughly unappreciated by the programmers at the stations that bought it from the syndicators! It ran so early in the Syracuse market that I only caught it because I had Flu and had to get up to take meds one Saturday morning! (For some reason, unbeknownst to me, most of these programmers range in outlook towards sci-fi from ignorant to OPENLY HOSTILE. This has been the case since the inception of broadcast tv to present day--it is amazing that in such a barren atmosphere that sci-fi has done as well as it has!) It is my earnest hope that some savvy production company will revive it as either anime' or live action--perhaps even as an internet series! I hope someone will post the info for rental or purchase of DVD's of this series if available!

  Mark hasn't given up on Xenozoic Tales (the original name for Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) but is waiting for the right time to return to the characters.
  This animated series was a fun realization of the black and white comics, now available from Dark Horse Comics as reprints, and features the world's most influential creatures, dinosaurs. Beneath it's action-adventure surface lies a message about the cataclysmic effects humans have on the Earth's environment and how future generations reform societies in the wake of the disaster. Strange and unique sci-fi if I say so myself.
  Unlike the Dinosaurs, Mark Schultz and Xenozoic Tales aren't extinct.

  I had a good laugh out of watching Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. In fact, not that the show was particularly humorous but there was something special, something unique that brought a smile to my face when I watched this. hide « show »
