Petrie bores everyone at the precinct with stories about and pictures of his new baby daughter. Christine, on the other hand, tries to downplay her personal happiness, a romantic relationship with Homicide Sergeant Dorian McKenna, but she fools no one.
Cagney and Lacey are sent to investigate a suicide in an apartment building. An elderly gentleman threw himself from his window. Another tenant, George Poulianakis, mentions that life has been hell since the building was sold to Leonard Nolan, a man he's never met. Strangers wander through the hallway and harass people, the heating breaks down continually. The case brings Cagney together with her boyfriend from Homicide: McKenna does not believe the man committed suicide. There was another case recently of a woman dying in suspicious circumstances in a building owned by Leonard Nolan.
After hours, Cagney and McKenna go out on a date. Cagney is surprised to learn that McKenna uses cocaine once in a while. When George Poulianakis gets attacked in the building, the detectives decide to keep an eye on the building around the clock. Again Cagney discovers McKenna using cocaine. He claims it's necessary to stay awake during a stakeout. They witness some punks breaking into the boiler room and wrecking the heating system. In the chase that follows, McKenna risks his life to catch the men, making Cagney wonder whether the cocaine is making him do dangerous things.
To everyone's surprise Leonard Nolan refuses to push charges against the two punks. As they are important witnesses, Samuels holds them on the charge of resisting arrest. When Cagney tells Lacey about McKenna's cocaine use, Lacey reacts badly. She completely disapproves of McKenna now. Still, she invites him over with Cagney for dinner.
During the dinner at the Lacey household Mary Beth does not notice anything special about McKenna, but after a visit to the bathroom he is suddenly hyperactive. She realizes that the man took some cocaine in her house.
The next time Cagney sees McKenna again, she finds him talking in his car with a strange man who's holding a gun to McKenna's back. She interrupts the conversation, scares the man away and wants to chase him. McKenna stops her, saying that there was nothing fishy about it: he owed the man some money. Frustrated by McKenna's behavior, Cagney attacks him and they wind up rolling around, fighting in the street.
Pressed by Samuels, the two punks finally admit that they were paid by Nolan to wreck the heating system. He's trying to get rid of some elderly tenants. They claim he sometimes harasses these people personally. Cagney and Lacey get George Poulianakis to identify Leonard Nolan. Yes, it was the man who attacked him.
With the case closed Cagney warns McKenna that she will turn him in if he doesn't change his ways.
