"Growing Up is the Greatest Adventure of All"

Welcome to the Caillou guide at TV.com! This show is about the life of a young bald boy named Caillou, his family and his friends. It is based on the books by Christine L'Heureux and Helene Despeteaux, which is highly popular in the Quebec area in Canada.

There are actually two versions of the show. The first version premiered in late 1997, is only 5 minutes in length, consists of 65 episodes, and is fully animated. The plotline of this version is that a grandmother reads her grandchildren a Caillou book. While this version enjoys success in some countries outside the US, it was never formally aired in the US. The second version, which premiered in late 2000, has the show exended to 30 minutes, and has puppets, music and live action segments thrown in. The animation parts, however, are a mixture of the first version of the show with the "grandma reading to kids" part of the story lopped off and some new stories (the stories are completely original as of the U.S. second season.) You can usually tell when you're watching a story lifted from the first version because in these, Caillou wears a non-descript dull-grey shirt rather than the bright-yellow one he wears in the newer segments. It premiered in the US and is now airing side-by-side with repeats of the old version in Canada. It is also aired around the world, although some parts of the world still air the old version.

In 2006, Caillou debuted even more new episodes. These new episodes now feature fantasy segments, but no longer any puppet segments or musical numbers performed by real children. Instead, Caillou performs a song in-between the second and third story segments of each episode. These new episodes have now finished their run, but if you missed any, watch for upcoming repeats on PBS.

Both versions of the show are known to be available in 2 languages - French and English.

The show is produced by Cookie Jar animation in Canada, known in older seasons as CINAR. It is available in Dolby Surround and with Close Captioning on selected networks.

Note 1:The old (5-minute) version is listed in this guide as Season 1 episodes, while the new (30-minute) version are listed as episodes from Season 2 onwards. Also, due to the varying runtimes, the runtime entry is omitted on purpose.

Note 2: The network in the information section was formerly Teletoon, as this was the first network to pick up the show. It has been changed to PBS to reflect that the airdates listed in the guide for the newer (and current) episodes of show reflect the dates that the program aired on PBS.

Note 3: The new version is aired under the title "Caillou and Friends" on TeleToon Canada. This is done presumably to avoid title conflicts with the old version of the show.

Note 4: Season 3-4/2-3US no longer contain any edited versions of first season episodes. They instead consist entirely of original stories. less

• Worst Show EVER!!!!

  Caillou is the KING OF WHINING!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAH! hide show

  The biggest reason why I can't stand this show is because Caillou whines too much, and it's pretty irritating. Also, this show has been on PBS for quite a long time (about 9 years), so I would like to see it get cancelled soon.

  Guh-ross! Why did I ever watch this?! hide show

  Just as everyone says, this show is disgusting! I can't stand to watch it. It makes me feel sick just to even know I watched it as a 5 year old, or even, for that matter, recorded it!
  
  The show is basically about this bald four-year-old and how he deals with life. He lives with his "mommy" and "daddy" and little sister, Rosie. In the older version of the show, there used to be these kid singers that would come up and sing some "educational" song. They are so annoying, and I'm still trying to get the Food-A-Licious song out of my head.
  
  In the older version, they also had these puppet segements with Teddy (Caillou's stuffed bear), Rexie (stuffed dinosaur), and Gilbert (Caillou's cat). Those puppet parts of the show are the only parts that I can watch without going insane.
  
  What I really hate about Caillou is a number of things:
  
  1. He's bald, but only 4 years old! Does he have some kind of freaking hair disease or something?! And why does everyone else in the show have hair?! They never explain that.
  
  2. He's annoying! Gah, he whines so much, the show is just worthless. It makes me wonder how I ever found this show worthy of recording as a 5 year old.
  
  3. The animation style in the stories. Wow. The animation in the season 1 episodes is just crud. It's hard to adjust to, as it's messily done.
  
  4. It's on PBS. PBS used to have awesome shows that you'd love and never stop loving, most of which I never saw durring their original run, sadly. It's not fair to put this crud-a-palooza on such a previously awesome station and give it a bad reputation.
  
  5. They're making new episodes. I thought the show was canceled, but it's a returning series, according to this guide.
  
  Final Worlds: Avoid this show at all costs!

  Two words: Whiney Baby. hide show

  Is your child too patient? Too loving? Too selfless? Too kind, generous, and appreciative?
  
  Then fear no longer. Caillou is here. In no time at all your wonderful child will be trained in all the skills of getting whatever he wants by driving you completely insane. Skill #1: Whine. When that fails, try skill #2: Whine some more. If that fails then whip out skill #3: Whine even some more. Of course, Caillou has other wonderful things to teach your wonderful impressionable child, like how to be selfish, rude, spiteful, argumentative, and generally a royal pain in the arse.
  
  Congratulations. You've succeeded in turning your wonderful child into a first class hellion, and you couldn't have done it without Caillou. With children's shows like this your kids will be thoroughly screwed up for life ... along with everyone else's kids who are raised by parents who don't have a clue what their kids are watching.

  Caillou is far from a great show but kids seem to like it. hide show

  My kids love it and seem to learn some things from it. I walk out of the room when it's on and take a much needed rest on the couch! That's a good show for me! I need help finding a stuffed animal from when they had the Caillente Kids singing. It's from the "All Wet" episode that aired I believe in 2003. I'm new to this so I don't really know where to look for this. Any help would be great since my son has a dog just like the stuffed bunny that was shown in this episode. Please help!

  This is why kids are turned away from "educational" television. hide show

  This has to be one of the worst TV shows that PBS has set out in a long time, I mean Caillou has to be one of the most terrible children shows of our era, or all time for that matter. First off Caillou, the main character has to be one of the most annoying and poorly developed cartoon character of all time. All he does is wine about the dumbest things, talk about the stupidest things, and fight with his younger sister about the dumbest things.
  The morales (if you can ever find on) are the same, if it's not about sharing it's about caring, and Caillou does neither. He's disrespectful to both of his parents contantly, by disobeying orders and making a fuss about a rule. This is the message they're trying to send children? In every episode, Caillou has completely learned nothing from the experience he had in the previous episode.
  He learns to share in one episode.
  And in the episode RIGHT AFTER that episode, he doesn't want Rosy to have his car.
  
  All in all a 3. Why a 3, because the puppet segements were very entertaining actually. But when they stopped airing them to replace them with horrible music videos by children who can't spell half the words they say, the show is horrible now....well it's been horrible.
