Carly Pope: Biography

Carly graduated high school in Vancouver in 1998. She also studied for one year at the University of British Columbia. She made her American acting debut with her role in the television movie, "I've Been Waiting For You." She landed the role of Sam McPherson on the 1999 WB series "Popular" after previously auditioning for the role of Popular girl Brooke McQueen.

She says that her first kiss was when she was 11 years old and it was sloppy.
  • Carly: Idealistically, I'd love to stay here and just be doing Canadian stuff. It's unfortunate when at the end of the day it's hard to make a living at it up here. I feel a necessity to find some financial stability and I don't want to have to leave the industry to do that. It's a struggle, but I'm happy to throw caution for a little while longer and see how it goes. And to be perfectly honest, I put myself in that proverbial safety net for a long time - I really did. Fortunately, I have a little jackknife and I tore a hole into it and now I'm getting out.(edit)
  • Carly: (On how she chooses her roles) I play a bit of a strategic game with choosing roles that might be educational, insightful, or inspiring. I try and find characters that represent what I would like to see on TV, being a little bit more open-minded, less stereotypical.(edit)
  • Carly: When I was younger, when I thought of myself as older, I would have these little flashes of fame, but then they would go away because it always seemed so far off.(edit)

  • Carly: Acting was always an innate ambition, it was where I belonged.(edit)
  • Carly: I kind of see myself as a cartoon that's on its way to becoming a real person that has to find that special amulet or mushroom to get to that next realm or level. I don't feel like anything is that tangible. It freaks me out, why I feel unhappy or conflicted and why that can change on a dime. I feel very manic right now, but I'm confident where I am.(edit)
