As the episode opens, the carnival is on the road to Babylon and stops to set up in a nearly abandoned town. Samson, Sofie, and Lodz all get ready to venture out, each with their own agendas. Already the carnies are becoming stressed about the idea of going to Babylon. Judging from the talk, Babylon is none to kind to the carnival. Stumpy dismisses all of it as rumors.

In California, Reverend Balthus, the man who raised Justin and Iris from small children, pays a visit. It seems Justin’s old congregation has been feeling neglected due to the work on the new mission and have written to the bishop about it. Justin refuses to give up his ministry citing the visions he has had as words from God.

Meanwhile in town, Samson has found a familiar hooker while Sofie pretends to be a widow to entice a man in the local café. While their backs are turned, massive dust storms blacks out everything and the remaining carnies must scramble to keep safe. The storm comes upon Lodz and Ben out in the truck. Lodz ventures out into the storm and Ben chases after. He finds the man in an abandoned cabin. As Lodz looks into Ben’s mind, Ben becomes frantic and as he yells for Lodz to stop, the storm immediately becomes calm. Lodz comments that the storm is under Ben’s power. As he denies it, the storm begins again. “Only God can make the weather stop,” says Ben. Lodz then pushes a hot poker into Ben’s skin which nearly immediately heals. Lodz realizes the gift the boy has. Back in town, waiting for the storm to pass, Sofie has convinced the boy to have sex with her on the floor of the café. Samson is trapped inside the prostitute’s home with another gentleman. The hooker gives a discount to the younger man since she has nothing better to do and Samson become angry and begins to insult her. He offers her money to see how long she can go with the other man. She refuses his money and goes back upstairs with the man to get back at Samson. After the storm ends, she tells Samson he is no longer welcome in her home.

Sofie hurries back to the carnival to check on her mother. Because the windows were left open, her mother, who cannot move by herself, is covered in thick black dust and can hardly breathe. While Samson is still away, Jonesy goes into the locked Management trailer against strict orders. At first timid, he then becomes anxious when Management does not respond. After searching the trailer, he finds no one. Shocked, he begins to believe that there never was any management and that Samson is the one leading them on this dangerous trek. His attitude toward Samson is cool as the leader returns.

Across the country, Iris wakes Justin up to deliver some bad news. The ministry has caught fire. They hurry to the scene where Brother Justin collapses in anguish over finding the charred bodies of the orphans that were living in the ministry.
