This week the carnival is in Tipton. There seems to be bad news from the start. The sheriff from Tipton, who was previously in on the take, has decided that the carnival cannot set up there. The people in his town do not have the money to give to the carnival. Meanwhile, Ben and Jonesy have gone into town for supplies. While there, Ben sees the truck that his mother was standing in front of in the picture he found in the baggage trailer. When he tries to find its owner, he is recognized by the family of the little girls whose legs he healed in the first episode in Milfay. When the townspeople discover this, they swarm him and beg him for a healing touch.

In the mean time, Brother Justin and the migrants are beginning to turn Chin’s into the new church. Justin is furious when the Town Council tells him that they have slated Chin’s for destruction. They want him to move his church out of town. When Justin becomes upset, one the councilman becomes physically ill, like he is having a heart attack. Justin rages on.

Back at the carnival, Samson thinks quickly about Ben’s newfound fame. Instead of a freak show, the carnival will continue as a revival. Ben will be the star of the show as a holy healer. The carnival gets the backing of the local minister with a little financial persuasion, while the sheriff is furious. That night, the carnies put on a show while Ben pretends to heal a disguised Ruthie. The next morning, Ben asks Sofie to drive him back into town. After a silent argument with her mother, Sofie relents. Sofie drives them to Mrs. Donovan’s house, the owner of the truck he saw in town the day before and Big Sky Farms. The house is a decrepit version of one he has been seeing in his dreams, where a man and woman listen to music and talk on the porch. Inside, Mrs. Donovan tells them she is dying and also tells them that they were expected. She tells him that she knew Scudder and that Ben has the same gift Scudder had. She also informs him, unfortunately that there are rules that factor into his gift. Before she can tell him more, however, her son, the sheriff, interrupts and throws Ben out.

Ben and Sophie are late for the next show. While the carnival’s replacement for Ben is trying to “heal” Dora Mae, the sheriff interrupts and begs for his mother to be healed. As Ben steps forward, the tense moment breaks as Mrs. Donovan begs to not be healed. He asks her where Scudder went. She leaves Ben a message with her last words, “Babylon.” After the show, Samson is furious with Ben for attempting to lay hands on the woman and puts him on latrine duty. When leaving Tipton, Samson gives Jonesy his new driving orders. Jonesy realizes with horror that they are headed straight for Babylon.
