Marge begs John to offer Art a job at Barnett Security, because he's been moping around the house in his bathrobe ever since he retired, and she's worried about him. Since she doesn't want Art to know that she said anything, John simply tells Art that he needs an extra hand around the office, one who's experienced. After turning the offer down under the pretense that he's spent, Art halfheartedly takes him up on it. Tommy becomes jealous when he finds out that Art has a desk (something he doesn't have), and John has to placate him. With Art out of her hair, Marge goes to Kate, and gets in hers. Art gets power-crazy, and starts acting like he runs the company, which makes Tommy more jealous when he finds out Art got to call a meeting. Marge drives Kate up the wall by dragging her to yoga class and planning a Cirque du Soleil outing that she can't bring herself to say no to. When John lets Kate know that Art is making a nuisance of himself at work, she pleads with him to be honest with his father, so both of their problems will go away. But he doesn't think honesty is the best policy, and tries to prevent her from coming clean with Marge. Even though he's unsuccessful, when Kate asks Marge to give her some space and says that she can't make Cirque de Soleil, she lies about why she can't go after Marge ruefully puts her on the spot, and claims she has to attend a parent/teacher conference. John takes a more active approach with his new "employee" after Victor says that Art fired him -- he tells Art that he's been doing such a good job at work that he needs him to keep an eye on Tommy, who hasn't been. And the best way to do that is to ride patrol with Tommy. When Tommy has a conniption over this, John tells him what Marge told him, but leaves out what he told Art. Against John's wishes, Art informs Tommy that John thinks he's incompetent and asked him to babysit him -- which infuriates Tommy. Kate eases her guilt by convincing Marge to take Lily to Cirque du Soleil. At least until Marge and Lily unexpectedly come home early -- because Marge got the date wrong -- and Marge sees that Kate doesn't have a parent/teacher conference. Then Lily gets upset when she hears that Marge invited Kate first... and that Kate had to ask her to. In the middle of their war, Art and Tommy get back, and Tommy chews John out for lying to him about why he had Art ride with him. That's when Art announces that he isn't depressed, and Marge confesses that she started the chain of lies because he was driving her nuts around the house and she wanted some space just like Kate. Art and Marge make amends, leaving the siblings to finish what they started.
