Central Park West was created by Darren Star, the man behind such hits as "Melrose Place" and "Sex and the City".

Perhaps the most sophisticated prime time soap ever made, Central Park West premiered on September 13, 1995. It aired Wednesdays from 9:00 - 10:00 p.m. With a cast headlined by former Oscar nominee Mariel Hemingway, Central Park West centered around the glamorous and exciting life for the staff of trendy magazine 'Communique', owned by Allen Rush (Ron Leibman), "the Darth Vader of publishing". Mariel Hemingway played the role of Stephanie Wells, the newly appointed editor-in-chief of 'Communique'. Central to the plot is the rivalry between Stephanie and Allen's stepdaughter Carrie Fairchild (Mädchen Amick), a scheming Generation-X bitch who does her best to seduce Stephanie's writer husband Mark Merrill (Tom Verica). The series followed several other ambitious New Yorkers, their love, treachery, hopes and dreams through thick and thin. One of the most notable being the evil and deceitful Australian bombshell Rachel Dennis (Kylie Travis), the new fashion editor at 'Communique'.

Stylish and with terrific dialogue, Central Park West was perfectly designed for the same young, fashion oriented Generation-X audience that had given "Melrose Place" such a warm welcome. Surprisingly, the show didn't deliever as good as expected and was taken off the air revamped and put back on the air during the summer of 1996. Mariel Hemingway had quit and the show now focused more on the older characters. CBS now aired two episodes a week and Gerald McRaney, Noelle Beck and film diva Raquel Welch joined the cast.

Well-cast, well-played, fast-paced and brilliant. Central Park West is one of the greatest soaps to have been shown on TV. Don't miss the opportunity to watch this show all over again if you can. It's well worth it.less «

  She seemed so nice at the outset but she turned out to be a scheming  psycho! At one point she seemed so genuine, so in love and so willing to risk losing Peter over matters of principle. Not only that but they did split several times and at times looked like not getting back together. A huge risk for the sort of person she turned out to be. Was the selfish, psycho b!tch behaviour always on the cards or was that 'plot development'?less «

  One of the best primetime soaps! hide « show »

  I loved this show! I wasn't too much of a fan of the reworked verison that came out in summer of 1996. But the 1st half was killer. The plots were great and not so over the top like Melrose had gotten. I loved the whole New York locale and the richness of the characters. Carrie is by far one of all time favorite characters in prime time soap history. And that is saying alot. I wish this show would come out on DVD because in the U.S they didn't show 3-4 shows, because it got pulled and they started with the reworked verison. Which the only plus that I liked about it was that it gave Lauren Hutton much more to do.

  It was much better than Melrose place.
  
  Had it been aired a couple of years earlier, it would have become am international success.
  
  Think about it for a second: it had every required element and much more - The designated B**ch was already on board (Madchen Amick), versatile and talented cast that included new actors with well-known ones, (like Raquel Welch, Lauren Hutton, Ron Leibman & Mariel Hemingway)not to forget the great story-lines.
  
  The major problem was its bad time slot. If I remember correctly, CBS put its premiere episode against Melrose Place 200th episode, and if you ask me, that wasn't a fair fight...
  
  I think that if it will be released on DVD, recognition will soon follow.
