Here are some general show, character trivia. Some are also in the episode guides:
- In a 1996 episode, the series quietly broke a major network TV taboo by showing the uncensored breasts of a teenage girl after her character undergoes successful reconstructive surgery. The scene, conducted with no fanfare and in good taste, attracted little controversy. - Premiered on a Thursday in the US, the same night as "ER" (1994). "Hope" was trounced in the ratings and moved to another night. Actors Noah Wyle and Peter Berg appeared on each others shows in an uncredited or voice-over roles. In one storyline, "Hope" did a commercial that looked exactly like the opening credits to "ER." - The first television show to be shown in HDTV in the USA. - Mandy Patinkin portrayed his character Dr. Geiger in crossover appearances in both "Homicide: Life on the Street" (1993) and "Picket Fences" (1992). Saint Elsewhere Trivia: - St. Elsewhere co-starred Mark Harmon as Dr. Bobby Caldwell. - Dr. Austin wins the "Left Anterior Descending Aorta" award for being a top notch cardiac surgeon - this was previously awarded to Dr. Craig on St. Elsewhere. - Stephen Furst appeared playing a vet named Elliot. On St. Elsewhere he played Elliot Axelrod whose father was a vet (he did not appear as his actual St. Elsewhere character though as Elliot Axelrod, he was killed off in St. Elsewhere). - Dr. Austin quotes her mentor to be "Dr. David Demidian." Mark Craig ('William Daniels' ) on St Elsewhere said that Demidian was his mentor as well. |

You didn't mention that the award Dr. Austin won was first awarded to Dr. Craig on St. Elsewhere. But the biggest connection to St. Elsewhere was that it co-starred Mark Harmon as Dr. Bobby Caldwell.

St. Elsewhere was very dark, similar in mood to Hill Street Blues. There is another very minor connection which I didn't mention a few days ago because I thought it was too small. But now that there is a whole category of these connections, I'll mention it. It was in the episode in which Alberghetti and Geiger are trying to follow another surgeon on a video link from Sri Lanka. Kavi Raz who played that surgeon was a co-star on St. Elsewhere.

Working at Chicago Hope or being a family member of someone who does, is apparently very hazardous to your health. In the 6 seasons, at least 18 regular or recurring characters in that category became hospital patients; some, more than once. They are: Dr. Karen Antonovich - Brain tumors - Season 1 Dr. Arthur Thurmond - Heart attack - Season 1 Dr. Danny Nyland - Severed fingers - Season 1 - Multiple trauma injuries in a car accident - Season 3 Alan Birch, Esq. - Multiple gunshot wounds - Season 2 Camille Shutt, RN - Seizures - Season 2 Dr. Dennis Hancock - Gunshot victim - Season 2; - Sarin gas victim - Season 5 Dr. Aaron Shutt - Brain aneurysm - Season 4; - Bioterrorism victim - Season 6 Dr. Billy Kronk - Lacerated nose - Season 1; - Broken hand - Season 4 Dr. Jack McNeil - Mugging victim - Season 4; - Gunshot victim - Season 6 Dr. Diane Grad - C- Section - Season 4 Dr. Phillip Watters - Coma - Season 5 Sara Wilmette (Kate's daughter) - Hypothermia - Season 5; - Car accident - Season 5 Dr. Kate Austin - Car accident with internal and orthopedic injuries - Season 5 Stuart Brickman, Esq. - Measles - Season 6 Dr. Keith Wilkes - Bad drug reaction - Season 6 CEO Hugh Miller - Heart attack - Season 6 Dr. Gina Simon -Hemorraging from an ectopic pregnancy - Season 6 Alicia (Birch) Geiger - Congenital heart defects - Seasons 1 & 6 |

There are several recurring themes and storylines throughout the history of the series. This list may not be comprehensive. They include: Threats to Athletes: Episodes in this category have some gifted athlete whose career is threatened by illness or injury, which leads them to refuse medically necessary treatment or induces the doctors to come up with drastic and/or risky procedures to save their professional futures. Season 1 Great White Hope Season 2 Christmas Truce Season 4 White Trash Season 6 Vigilance and Care Biohazards: Examples of this includes highly contagious and deadly epidemics and terrorist attacks. Season 1 The Quarantine Season 2 Last One Out, Get the Lights Season 6 White Rabbit Gender Issues: This explores issues of gender identity, gender expression, gender experiments, and intersexual condition. Season 1 Informed Consent Season 2 Right to Life Season 2 Women on the Verge Season 2 The Parent Rap Season 6 Boys Will Be Girls Marfan's Syndrome: Patients with this somewhat unusual condition. Season 1 Death Be Proud Season 6 Team Play Season 6 Simon Sez Religious Objections: Patients refuse or modify the recommended treatment because of it. Season 1 You Gotta Have Heart Season 2 The Parent Rap Season 5 Viagra-Vated Assault Season 6 Hanlon's Choice Violence Breaks Out in the ER: Season 1 Shutt Down Season 1 Life Support Season 2 Quiet Riot Operating on Fetuses: Season 2 From Soup to Nuts Season 4 Risky Business Season 6 Miller Time Dead Fathers: Women trying to become pregnant after their husbands had died. Season 2 Rise From the Dead Season 6 Upstairs, Downstairs Advice to Abort: Abortion is a very touchy subject throughout the series. It often isn't brought up as a medical alternative even in appropriate circumstances. These are examples of when it is brought up, but is rejected in every instance. Season 3 Higher Powers Season 5 Kiss of Death Season 6 Miller Time Absent Organ: These are instances that for a variety of reasons that transplants are planned or even begun, but there isn't an organ to transplant. This doesn't include the usual circumstance of being on a waiting list and there isn't an organ available. Season 3 A Day in the Life Season 5 Home Is Where the Heartache Is Season 6 The Heart to Heart Season 6 Gray Matters Miracles: Instances of unexplainable cures or illnesses. Season 3 Hope Against Hope Season 4 Memento Mori Season 6 Faith, Hope, and Surgery |

If any of you Chicago Hope-lovers are still around: I have a question for you. In one of the most recent NCIS-eps Rocky Caroll is introduced as NCIS assistent director. He also worked with Mark Harmon on Chicago Hope as doctor Keith Wilkes. Now on NCIS when they first shake hands, Gibbs (MH) receives 2 dollar something from Leon Vance (RC), saying that settles something that happend 8 years ago. This may be an allusion to the time they worked together at Chicago Hope. Does anyone remember something like that? Thanks for many answer! |
