Christopher Timothy was born in Wales and was a boarder at the private Shrewsbury Grammar School. His father, Andrew Timothy, was a priest at a local church but curiously became a well-known BBC announcer.

When asked what inspired him to become an actor, he replied: When I was about six or seven I went to a pantomime and was entranced by the scenery. It depicted a forest and seemed to go on forever. I wanted to be part of that huge forest, of that world on stage. And that yearning set me on the path to acting.

Although he left school with only one O Level, he decided to become an actor and won a place at the prestigious London drama school - the Central School of Speech and Drama. Following various television roles, it was in 1978 that he really came to the attention of the British public with All Creatures Great and Small, a television series that ran for 12 years, based on the life of a vet, James Herriot in the Yorkshire Dales. In 2000, he joined another BBC daytime series called Doctors, playing the part of Dr. Brendan Mac McGuire; he left the series in 2006. Trained at Central School of Speech and Drama.
