Nineteen year-old Christy Huddleston decides to leave a sheltered life of luxury in 1912 Asheville to serve as a teacher in a remote mission schoolhouse in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Young and naïve but optimistic, she finds herself in the midst of overwhelming poverty, ignorance and superstition, yet also surrounded by great beauty, faith and love. Even as Christy wrestles against seemingly impossible odds to make a difference in her schoolchildren's lives, she is emotionally torn between the attentions of two very different men: Reverend David Grantland, a young, outspoken and idealistic minister from Boston, and Dr. Neil MacNeill, a man with a painful past, born and raised in Cutter Gap, now a physician working hard to establish the benefits of 20th century medicine in a place where folklore and herbalism prevail.


The series was based upon the novel written by Catherine Marshall in 1967.


The series was filmed on location in Townsend, Tennessee, USA.

• Did anyone else enjoy this show?

  I love this show! I hated to see it end especially the way it left us hanging. My favorite character was the Doctor and my least favorite character was the one played by Tyne Daly.

• Conclusion?

  Some fans have reported an extra expisode, not on the DVD, that aired later w/the entire cast that wrapped up the cliffhanger that the show ended with. I had never heard of this, can anyone else confirm that it exists?

  I just got back from a trip to the Great Smokies with my family yesterday, and we rented a cabin in the town of Townsend, Tennessee, about 20 miles from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Townsend was the production home of the "Christy" television series (we knew this before we went), and we asked around the town where we could find the filming location (Hint: don't ask for directions to the site at the visitor's center...they won't tell you!), and a person who owns a cavern business gave us directions, and we found it very easily about two miles off of the main highway to Pigeon Forge. The first thing we saw was the "El Pano" Blacksmith barn, which is the most obvious remnant of the filming days. A few hundred yards later we found the schoolhouse behind some trees in a distant corn field (you can't actually drive up to the school or go near enough to any of the buildings to peek in...but it's still fun to enjoy them from the road!), and it was easy to get the "stock" shot of the school house from the road. The Mission House and another unknown large wooden building were all but hidden from sight, obscured by a large grove of pine trees (you could only see the roof of the mission house, and very little of the unknown building). After we turned around to exit the area (after snapping a few shots of the school and barn, of course), we noticed in the weeds just off the road the less obvious decaying Doctor's House, as well as another log house that was used in the "Sweetest Gift" episode (and likely others). Fairlight's cabin was not seen at all, but my family and I believe that the Doctor's cabin may have doubled as her cabin, with the cameras shooting from the back instead of the front. After seeing the site first hand, the great talents of the camera crew are more obvious than ever: the El Pano barn, the Doctor's House, and the log house were mere feet from the road...one poorly planned camera move, and the audience may have discovered these buildings weren't as remote as portrayed! We also discovered one other building that was used in the show (albeit only in stock footage): the log house that Christy sees from the train when she is pulling into El Pano is located in the Cade's Cove region of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 10 miles away. You can tour this cabin, although it is vacant and badly vandalized (there were also bats sleeping in the rafters...lol!). At the Townsend Visitor's Center (where, as I said, they will NOT tell you the directions to the filming location because it is on private property), you can find information about Del Rio and Chapel Hollow, the REAL El Pano and Cutter Gap, respectively. My family also took the time to drive the fifty odd miles to this site, but were sadly disappointed. Only the church remains, and it has been moved from it's original location. The 5 miles or so of dirt road from Del Rio to the Chapel Hollow mission is really not worth the trouble (and neither is the 50 mile drive to Del Rio)...the only thing you will find are a few signs that denote the respective locations of where the buildings once stood. Even though it IS interesting to know where the "REAL" story took place, once you see how narrow and tortuous the road is, you will KNOW that it isn't worth it...especially when there aren't even any historic details on the signs! We decided that this must have been a clever ruse of the Townsend Visitor's Center to throw "Christy" fans off of the trail to the TV location, and very little more than that. Since I personally don't want to exploit the owners of the filming property, I will only give you one hint: Dunn's Hollow to the end. less «

  A great outstanding drama for just about everyone hide « show »

  Even if this is based off a bestselling novel. It still is a great series. Quick plot a city girl becomes a mission teacher in the Great Smoky Mountains. For the first time see comes face to face with the harsh relms of real life. As she tries to do her job she is faced with many diffculties. But she tries to win the respect of the pround people that live there, and try to make a difference in their lives. Me and my wife have watched the T.V movie of it. Now we just finished the show. Now she's tring to read me the book so we can compare all them. so far I liked the show better.

  Christy is such and amazing show. I can't believe that I watched the entire season of it within a week with my sister. I just hope that I will be able to find the continuing episodes on DVD soon. I love the ambition that Christy displays throughout the movie, and the role is played so well. There is a message in each and every one of the episodes that makes you want to be a better person, and the romances keep up the interest level. I just hope that people will watch the show and appreciate the message behind all of the episodes as much as I did.

  Being an actor on the show, I know I'm biased...but it trully is one of the best family and faith-oriented shows ever to appear on television. hide « show »

  I would like to set the record straight, however, that the show took place in the Appalachian mountains of East Tennessee, not the Blue Ridge Mts. of West Virginia or in Kentucky. Specifically, she left her home in Ashevile, NC to teach at a mission in the fictional Cutter Gap, TN.
  
  However, the story of Christy, written by Catherine Marshall, was based on the true story of her mother who taught school in the real-life community of Del Rio, TN.
  
  The show was filmed in Townsend, TN, about 30 miles from Gatlinburg.

  oh the lessons taught by this show where ahead of there time it was a great show one of the best but did not last long enough hide « show »

  this was a show that could have been great if it was not cancled so soon it was a fine show and I am enjoying it all over again on dvd and remmbering the love of dr mcneil for christy and her being torn between him and the preacher the people of cutter gap made feel bad for there poverty and yet at the same time be encourged b there strenghth I am so glad they brought this show back on dvd it is such a classic that stands the test of time It also teaches important life leasons of streanghth and courage

  Young 19 year old Chirsty leaves the big city and head out to the Blue Ridge mountines, West Va. to become a teacher, and help those better themselves. hide « show »

  I loved this show. I was a little girl of about 12 when this was on and it inspire me to be come a teacher myself. I hope to help other such as she did. I really wish they would at the least show rerun, we need a major break from all the violent and reallity shows.
