A girl finds her dad murdered in their greenhouse. She tells the police that Charlie Forsberg and her dad were arguing earlier that day. The police search his home and find Charlie sitting at the kitchen with the murder weapon on his hands, he is arrested and confesses to murdering his neighbor. The police also find newspaper clippings about a girl who’s been missing for a year and a realtor woman, also missing. Steve suspects they have a serial killer on their hands.
Annabeth goes to talk to Charlie in jail and he tells her that he killed James Roberts because James acted as he was better than Charlie. Annabeth tries to make him talk more about why and how he killed Mr. Roberts. Det. Pitts asks about the two women in the newspaper clipping and Charlie tells them he killed them both and buried them in the same place, he gives the location of the bodies.
Maureen talks to the police officers about the arrest of Charlie Forsberg and they both give her their version, they saw the blood on the front yard and heard a woman scream inside, so they forced the door and entered the house. Annabeth tells Maureen she is unsure about Charlie, his victims don’t fit any pattern, and he didn’t give her a real reason as to why he killed them. Steve tells them that Mr. Forsberg’s lawyer entered a motion to suppress the evidence inside Charlie’s home because the police did not use a warrant.
Maureen interview Charlie's neighbors but their story matches the defense’s version, and not the police. Later, the police find one of Charlie’s other victims exactly where he said it would be. It is the body of Danielle Minik, the missing realtor.
The judge rules in favor of the defense and suppresses the evidence from Charlie’s house. The DA decides to charge Charlie with the murders of James, Danielle and Kirsten, even though they don’t have Kirsten’s body yet. Det. Pitts tells Annabeth that they found Kirsten alive.
Annabeth goes to the police station and is shocked to know Kirsten is alive and well. Kirsten says she was hidden in her boyfriend’s house. At the trial the defense explores this fact to try to convince the jury that Charlie didn’t kill the other people he confessed to killing, and confessed only to get attention. Steve is telling Annabeth to make a deal when they see Kirsten hugging Charlie’s mother outside the court.
Annabeth asks Kirsten about it and she says Charlie’s mother was her tutor before she went missing, but she didn’t know the guy accused was her son. Annabeth suspects that when Kirsten went missing and Charlie's mother stopped tutoring the kids, she had more time to spend with him and that’s what gave him the idea of killing the others. She talks to his mother and tells her about this theory. She tells Annabeth that Charlie did not want her to sell the house, so that's why he killed the real estate agent.
Annabeth convinces Mrs. Forsberg to testify against her son in the trial, and he is convicted to two terms of life in prison without parole, to be served consecutives.
