Additionally, in the episode Maurice said his mother taught him how to dance. The Swayze brothers' mother is choreographer Patsy Swayze. (edit) Don Swayze, who played the present-day Grant Hall, is only 10 years younger than Chris Mulkey, who played Pat Hall (Grant and Maurice's father). The plot of this episode might be inspired by the 2000 movie Billy Elliot, in which the titular leading character is also a boy who wants to become a dancer against the wishes of his working-class father. (edit) Flashdance
When Dr. Leroy berates Maurice Hall in front of the dance class, he tells him, "This isn't the steel mill." This is a reference to the 1983 movie Flashdance, in which Jennifer Beals played a character who was a steelworker by day and dancer by night. (edit)
