Finn has to investigate why a mother said her daughter was dying of cancer because the autopsy done after she supposedly committed suicide proves otherwise. Potter's friend is arrested for cocaine possession, but when his friend comes to him for help, Potter sends him to Desmond. Meanwhile, Cabot begins an anti-drug campaign.

The storyline of the mother faking her daughter's cancer might have been inspired by the real-life case of Teresa Milbrandt. Milbrandt was convicted of child endangerment and theft after she pretended that her seven-year-old daughter Hannah had cancer in order to get money and gifts from people in their hometown. She shaved Hannah's head and gave her sleeping pills to mimic the effects of chemotherapy and even put her daughter in counseling to prepare for death.
