Jules tries to party hard like a twentysomething and ends up looking like a total fool, when even her best friend Ellie, told her not to do it.
Write a Recap »Paper buddy, lol. That was a good gag they had on the show, something Jules would continue to call him in later episodes, but as a whole this show has yet to really hits its mark and find its groove, so to speak. I don't know if it will ever be able to do that, but I think this series has the potential to be a great series. They know how to make their female characters seem funny, not quite as well as Samantha Who? did, but certainly better than some of their previous sitcoms (like Knights of Prosperity), but I have to question how long people will want to watch this. Desperate Housewives built up characters they we loved to watch for six years, but can this show do that? I highly doubt it.
I'll continue watching, but I expected more from this.
Woa...what happened between the pilot and episode 2? hide show
Even though the pilot of Cougar Town didn't knock my socks off, it was funny enough to warrant sticking around for another show. As another reviewer pointed out, most of Cougar Town's laughs may have coasted off the buzz from the great Modern Family that had aired just before it.
Well, whatever the case, this followup episode was just plain awful- it was like a whole other show. Where was the energy? Every joke just sits there, and there was nothing snappy or saucy from the material. The best friends were flat, the ex is much less funny this time around (a little of him goes a long way) and I found that I really missed Courtney Cox's shrill yelling. This was worse than just a sophomore slump or bump in the road. This was bad enough to make me drop Cougar Town completely.
Maybe not quite as good as I thought... hide show
When I saw the Pilot to this show, I was probably just riding the laughs that I had gotten off of Modern Family, which had aired directly before it. The pilot to this show was funny, but watching it again before the second episode, I realized I don't have much in common with 40 something year old moms who want to have sex with young guys that are barely out of high school. I have more in common Jules' son, who looks at her mom as a crazy woman struggling with a midlife crisis.
The followup to the pilot was only half-funny, filled with more lame moments than smart. It's a shame that Bill Lawrence had to go from Scrubs to this, because Scrubs was one of the best sitcoms (well I suppose it still is, since it hasn't been canceled yet) but either way, Cougar Town probably won't be too funny to people who aren't either cougars or people who wish they were cougars.
I did like the part where Elly's husband takes every sip of a drink like it's the best one ever, and the tag where he drives the car into the trashcans, but it was too little too late. I just got sick of the show about midway through. I'll probably watch a little more of it, but it's not as good as The Middle or Modern Family..
Oh yeah, and Glee used Single Ladies way better than this show.
Shows gotta stop using Beyonce's Single Ladies track... hide show
I would be amazed if Cougar Town isn't canceled mid-season. I haven't checked the numbers, but I guess by TV.com's recent article - my suspicions will be proved right.
I am not being pessimistic, and nor do I expect the show to match the quality 30 Rock or Two and a Half Men carry with them. But, the concept seems idiotic. Who would really care about women in their 40s going by the 10 date rule, and trying to relive their 20s. The comedy scenes are forced, and monologues really irksome. The writing is immature, and the writers have no idea how the lines sound when they are actually converted into a scene. It's like my buddy told me really good joke, and I would like to put it in my TV show. Nope, never gonna work.
Jules gets the impression she missed her 20's because her best friend, her best friends husband, and her ex all had great wild twenties stories. So with the help of her assistant she is bound and determined to make some stories of her own. hide show
I see the review scores and I wonder if these people are watching the same program I am. For some reason I think Cougar Town is going to be another Two and a Half Men. When you read the scores and the reviews of that shows episodes it gets clobbered, but when you look at the viewer numbers it hits a home run. This is some funny stuff and definitely is worth watching.
Cox comes across a little anorexic but then again she always did on friends as well. She does a great job of making fun of herself which is tremendously endearing. In this episode she does the partying all night thing and as those of us who have survived a few years know, the older you get the harder it becomes to survive those kind of nights.
I liked the paper buddies thing. That is classic Courtney Cox and she pulls it off. The overtly cheery nature can be grating but that's her charm. The ten date rule was funny as well.
Her best friend and neighbor Ellie played by Christa Miller-Lawrence is perfect again and her husband played by Ian Gomez is a riot. I also like Grayson played by Josh Hopkins better this episode. He seems more of a real person. A very funny laugh out loud comedy from one of the former friends stars. Thanks for reading.
