Murder in a FlashEpisode Number: 52 Season Num: 3 First Aired: Monday October 11, 2004 Prod Code: 303 |
E-mails and text messages trigger a mass gathering of students to perform a random task on a golf course. However, as the crowd disperses, the body of a high school student is found. The original message triggering the "flash mob" is traced to a high school senior whose father is a high-powered defense attorney. The case changes direction when Horatio and the team learn that the schoolmaster's daughter may have had something to do with the murder and evidence reveals that the victim was having an affair with his chemistry teacher.

Alexx: What are the odds huh? 100 People throw golf balls at the site of the death.
Horatio: Those odds are very slim, so question becomes, was the mob sent to draw us to the crime scene or to destroy it? (edit) Horatio: You have an ID on him Alexx?
Alexx: No, not yet, I know he died with an empty stomach and a full bladder, strong smell of alcohol.
Horatio: Respiratory failure.
Alexx: Wouldn’t be the first one to drink himself to death. (edit) Det. Salas: I ran those credit cards, looks like Madonna Arias charged $500 dollars worth of gas since yesterday.
Horatio: That’s an interesting ability for a dead woman. (edit) (Eric questions a suspect)
Suspect: “You’re a dead man” is just an expression.
Eric: No, legally it’s a threat. (edit) Calleigh: Do you think the parents have any idea that they’re paying for their kids to have sex with teachers and buy their grades?
Ryan: I don’t know, but it makes me realize what an angel I was.

The concept of a flash mob was pioneered in a 1973 short story, Flash Crowd written by science fiction author Larry Niven and included in his 1973 anthology The Flight of the Horse. He further explored the concept in a second, unrelated short story, The Last Days of the Permanent Floating Riot Club, published in the 1974 anthology A Hole in Space.
Niven's flash crowds differed from the mob depicted in this episode in that they were supported by teleportation technology. However, the concept is much the same - a random group of individuals converging on a spontaneously chosen time and place. (edit)
