Warrick heads the investigation of the murder of a con artist who turns out to be involved with Brass' daughter, and the evidence leads Sara on a counterfeit investigation.

With Grissom away, Warrick is in charge for the first time as the team investigates the murder of the con artist, who has run off with some tourists' money only to get shot and killed in the parking lot. The prime suspect in the case turns out to be Captain Brass' daughter, which causes Brass to take himself off the investigation professionally, but not personally.

Meanwhile, the physical evidence in the case leads Sara to investigate a high-end counterfeit operation after the money found on the victim turns out to be bogus.

Music:
Set It Off - P.O.D.
Time Has Come Today - The Chambers Brothers (edit)
This episode marks CSI creator Anthony Zuiker's first cameo appearance on the series. He is the clerk who turns away the couple with the fake casino chips. (edit)
William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger have only brief cameos in this episode. They needed extra time to film scenes from future episodes.
Ironically this was also the first episode to go number one on American television. (edit)

Grissom: Whoa. Careful. Livestock. (Holds up his jar of roaches) Hissing roaches from Madagascar.
Catherine: Sorry.
Grissom: These babies run two and a half miles an hour.
Catherine: I don't doubt that for a minute.
Grissom: Fifth annual entomological convention in Duluth. Cockroach racing finals. (Grissom pushes the door to his office open and walks in. Catherine follows)
Catherine: You're roach racing.
Grissom: Actually, I'm giving a tutorial on preserving mass crime scenes. The sideshow is racing this guys.
Catherine: Ah.
Grissom: I mean, to have a chance to run against legendary roaches like Cocky Balboa, The Drain Lover, Priscilla, Queen of the Gutters. It's huge.
Catherine: What do you feed those guys?
Grissom: Dog food.
Catherine: And who's... supervising night shift?
Grissom: You are.
Catherine: Me? I am on the red-eye to Reno. The Braun Family is opening a new casino. I am Sam's date.
Grissom: That's tonight?
Catherine: I told you once, memo'd you twice. (she sighs. Grissom is distracted by the roaches in the container)
Grissom: Man, these guys are primed.
Catherine (leaving): Better get somebody. (edit)
Warrick (to Sara): Hey I'm short on cash, can you loan me a hundred?
Sara: Funny. Very funny. (looks at watch) Oh, look shift's over. Guess you're one of us again. (edit)
Warrick: Acting supervisor? What about Nick? He's got seniority. Or Sara? She'd jump at the chance.
Grissom: If it was about seniority, I'd ask Nick. If I wanted someone to stay up for three straight days, I'd ask Sara. Instead, I want you. (edit)
Sara: If something doesn't feel right to you, it usually isn't. (edit)
Warrick: The job is fine. It's the other stuff -- the personalities.
Grissom: I love mankind, it's people I can't stand.
Warrick: Is that Einstein?
Grissom: Linus.
Warrick: Charlie Brown. Figures. (edit)

Trivia

Brass checks the information for Ellie Rebecca Brass’s “Red -1976 Camaro” the computer screen it reads license plate “QLF-084”. When he starts the pursuit he calls it in as a “Red -1978 Camaro” and the cars plates read “428-RVQ”. (edit)
In the final scene with Brass and Ellie by the waterfall, you can clearly see (and hear in the background) Brass saying "I'm a cop" even though it is dubbed over with "detective". What's also strange is that the remainder of Brass's lines are also dubbed by another actor. (edit)
When Warrick is talking to Doc Robbins his collar appears to be tucked in some shots and in others can be seen with one part of his collar out. (edit)
When Warrick is talking to Greg in the DNA lab comparing Brass's DNA, the boom mike is reflected on the back wall. (edit)
The Treasury Officer stated that the couple was from "Las Vegas County." Anyone from the government (local/county/state/federal) should know Las Vegas is in "Clark County". But Sara (who works for LVMPD/Clark County) did not react at all. (edit)

Allusions

add »
Grissom: Striking resemblance to Judas.
Brass: How's that?
Grissom: Both men lost their lives over a worthless bag of chips.

The Gospel of Matthew says that, after the arrest of Jesus by the Roman authorities (but before his execution), the guilt-ridden Judas returned the bribe to the priests and committed suicide by hanging himself. The priests could not return the money to the treasury so they used it to buy a plot of ground in order to bury strangers. (edit)
Grissom: Hey Sanders, no punk rock.
Greg: What about Black Flag?
Grissom: (looking at his jar of cockroaches) Are you nuts?

Black Flag is Henry Rollins' early band, as well as a common household pesticide (edit)

"Tearjerker"
the reason I say tear jerker is because I really did cry at the very end. The Brass and Brass daughter Ellie moment moved me greatly.
