Two very different stories - the shooting of Buddhist monks in their temple and the murder of a dancer 15 years before. hide show

I didn't like this episode too much when I first saw it, but it's actually very good and well plotted. The juxtaposition of the temple story with that of an exotic dancer, some scenes of which take place in a strip club, is very clever. It also shows up how easy it is to jump to conclusions about people based on initial impressions.

When five monks are killed, initial suspicion falls on everything from the surviving monk to possible gang-related links - then onto discovery of local neighborhood kids who might blame the monks for economic losses. The story is well played out and has a calmness about it, as well as a nicely tied-up ending.

The other story concerns one of Catherine's best friends when they were both stripping together. She was murdered and the murderer caught. It's now fifteen years later and the evidence in the case is due to be destroyed. Catherine wants one last look and what she finds suggests that the case was not watertight and begins to wonder if her mentor who investigated the case missed something - or worse. A good little story too, and one which shows Catherine's character off well, especially in the final scenes.

Excellent how you can jump to the wrong conclusion hide show

This is a great episode for several reasons. Part of it is about how a community becomes a suspect as to how they react to these monks. Part of it is how they seem to have a greater effect then the investigation could reveal and in the end, even though the guilty party is revealed, the mmotive for the murder is plain to all who watch the episode. I thought the fact that Grissom saw a reason in the wounds and the revealed truth hits him after the fact is gold!
Catherine has her own ghosts to deal with and in the end, her choice is the right thing to do, one that we all can admire.

Jimmy: You think I killed Stephanie?
Catherine: You were in love with her, Jimmy. That was no secret. But the ring was. (this seems to get his attention) Three karats and she turned you down. Same week she died. I never thought anything of it till now.
