The 11 apostles and 1 prophet of a cult are murdered by the last apostle: Abigail Spencer. The prophet, Joseph Diamond, moves from country to country, tricking college kids out of their parents' money. Abigail finds out and decides to kill everyone. hide show

The leader of a cult, Joseph Diamond travels around convincing college students to drop out, write home to their parents asking for money, then "ascend" with him "to the mother ship". Instead he gives them Zolpidem to drink so they'll sleep for ages, then splits to somewhere else so he can trick more people. He's done this several times before, and he's always been successful. But this time, an apostle, Abigail Spencer finds out about his plan to put them all to sleep, then run away, so she clubs him to death with a crowbar. She then subsitutes the Zolpidem for something a little stronger, and everyone ends up dying. Except Abigail herself. She goes home to her mother, then the police catch up to her and she tries to commit suicide, but they pump her stomach at the hospital, and she lives. Barely. Grissom goes to visit her in the hospital, and tells her if there's something up there watching us, they're wise enough to stay away. I liked this episode, but it was very dark. For example, we are shown really disturbing scenes of the cult members drinking the poison and dying. After watching "Shooting Stars" for the first time, I couldn't sleep. I think this episode should have gotten the "Due to mature theme, viewer discretion is advised" warning, like "Butterflied" (dismembered guy) and "Pirates of the Third Reich" (hidden torture chamber, where Leon Sneller conducts horrifying "scientific" experiments on people).

    Mass suicide... hide show

11 bodies are found, apparently they commited suicide (mass suicide) by drinking chemical substances. 1 bed is empty, and the person might be the one who is responsible for the mass suicide. Nick hesitates when he is going down, apparently the case in 5x24 (Grave Danger) seriously affected his job.

Another great episode. Danny Cannon, who is the writer and also the director of this episode, done a very good job to this episode. This episode is considered special because it's about religion (bad religion) and they think they can live happily in heaven if they die. One word to describe them--idiots. And we finally met Warrick's wife (beautiful). Love this episode, I just love it. CSI is getting better and better.

People try to commit mass suicide so that they can go to another world (yeah crazy i know!) hide show

So i though this episode was pretty good i like how it was revolved around the meteor-shower comming. There is alot of stuff in this episode like they found one guy dead away from all the other people and though that he tried getting away but he was really trying to get his ex girlfriend out of the place. In the end they figure out that one girl got away and this girl was a freak she tried commiting suicide but they pumped her stomach just in time! She wasnt happy and her and grissom had a nice talk about why and how they did all that stuff.

Impressionable teens and sex. Never a good combination. hide show

This episode seems to give a warning. Watch out for cults. Humans tend to want to believe in something, religion, science, the dinosaurs. And whilst most of it is harmless I find the subject of belief is often fraught with problems. And I do have to admit I like quantifiable evidence and so believe the story of the big bang over the seven days of creation I do find the story of alien spaceships tagging along in comets a mite bit imagination and belief stretching.

But it shows that humans can be impressionable and whilst the cult leader just wanted to make a few bucks, never actually intending to kill any of the followers although the cruelty of them waking up afterwards, realising that something was seriously wrong could be psychologically damaging they still would have been alive.

The warning though is clear. This episode does shine a light on the nature of cults, how they suck you in, how consuming they can be, I do realise that the mass suicide is only in the minority but the paralles that can be drawn with some religions you hear about in the papers and magazines is worrying.

Nicks fear of the bunker is subtle which is all it really needs and creates some realism to the character without making it a big issue which suits the style of the show.

The twists and turns this week were well handled and the cult idea was explored carefully leaving us to draw our own conclusions about them.

    A good episode.

Very well written episode, I loved it! hide show

This was a excellent episode that looked into a small cult who believe they could go to a better place.
A horrible way to die by being poisoned but was acted very well by all.
I would not have waited until everyone else died because it would have freaked me out too.
    Excellent location for this episode.

Nick got a little freaked out because he had to go under ground but that was fully understandable. I am glad they didn't just dismiss it and forget what he had been through and how it might effect him in future episodes.

Also in this episode we see Warrick's new wife. Even though I am a Warrick and Catherine fan I though his wife seemed very nice and they both seemed happy ... but I wonder how long it is going to last?

  • We meet Warrick's wife, Tina in this episode. She works with her ex at a hospital. []
  • Goof: When Grissom goes to enter the underground compound he only has his flashlight on his belt (on his back). What happened to the canteen he was wearing when he started? Later scenes inside the compound he has it back on. []
  • Goof: In the scene showing the meteor shower we can estimate five meteors per second (300 perminute) The actual maximum rate of the Orionids is 15 per minute or one every four seconds. A less than impressive shower from Comet Halley's particles. []

  • Charles Manson

Charles Milles Manson was the leader of a group of young followers known as "The Family" in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He planned and ordered the family to commit several brutal murders. He was convicted of murder although he was not accused of committing the murders in person and is currently serving a life sentence in a California prison. Since his trial and conviction, Manson's name and image have been integrated into American pop culture generally as a symbol of ultimate evil. He implied to his followers that he was Jesus Christ, saying he had died before, some 2,000 years ago. However, when asked directly in court he said, "I may be Jesus Christ. I haven't yet decided who I am." []
  • Jim Jones

James Jones was the American founder of the People's Temple church that developed into a group with cult-like beliefs, power structures and practices.
He claimed to be an incarnation of Jesus, Akhenaten, the Buddha, Lenin, and Father Divine. []
  • Grissom: Or maybe they had An Appetite for Murder

Given that Grissom's literary references are usually more classical, it's unclear whether this is a reference to the mystery by Cecile Lamalle or the mystery lovers cookbook by Kathy Borich []
