Doc Robbins (laughs): This is natural selection, the dumb ones die. (edit) Warrick: (Talking about Gavin McGill) Well, if he is lying somebody should give him an Emmy Award. (edit) Donna (to Rebecca): I changed his luck and he took my life. Every time we came to Vegas he would gamble for four hours exactly. You know what? I took that bath every time. David: Hello Grissom.

Sara (smiles): Exactly. (edit) Warrick (to Grissom): Well, if I know women, their husband is usually the last person to know anything. (edit) Warrick: Okay, Mr. Boyscout.
Greg: Eagle scout. I didn't earn a chest full of merit badges for nothin'. (edit) Catherine: Any chance that it was an accident?
Doc Robbins: When was the last time that you took a nap in Grissom's tub?(Catherine smiles up at him) (edit) Brass: Are you okay? I mean, working in Sam's hotel so soon after---after the, y'know--
Catherine: I think working helps. You know that. (edit) David (looking at the victim's skull which has no brain): It's a no-brainer.
Greg: I guess that makes me the search party. (edit) Warrick (looking over the cliff that the victim fell off): Hiking accident?
Sofia: It's gonna take you a while to get down there.
Warrick: Better than the express route she took. (edit) Brass: This guy doesn't live here. This is Ray Gaynor.
Sara: Maybe the other one is Lou.
Brass (looking at Ray's severed left arm): I bet my right arm that's his left. (he chuckles while Grissom and Sara exchange a look) (edit) Catherine: Rose petals in the bathtub had traces of grapeseed oil. Killer's sleeves were wet.
Grissom: So you get the clothes, you get your guy.
Catherine: Dry cleaners screwed us. (edit) Brass: So, changing your skivvies can change your luck? (edit) Henry: Well, you're persistent. I'll give you that. I tested the remaining marijuana in the paper wrapper. You were right. Your joint was dipped.
Nick: PCP?
Henry: No, embalming fluid.
Nick: Embalming fluid is the street name for PCP.
Henry: Yeah, but I don't use street names when I don't mean to. No, I mean real, inject into a dead person embalming fluid. Made of formaldehyde, methanol, ethanol, all that bad stuff. (edit) Sara (looking at the crime scene): I thought this only happened in the movies.
Grissom: Life imitates art. (edit) (David rolls over the body, and water spills out of the victim's mouth)
Catherine: I'm gonna take a stab at this and say drowning?
Brass: How do you drown in an elevator?
(A little later Catherine and Brass come upon a bathtub filled with rose petals)
Catherine: Now we know how you drown in an elevator. You don't. (edit)

Grissom's quote is also used by Catherine in the episode A Night at the Movies only in a different tense. Ironically, Sara's quote in Toe Tags refers to filming.



Sara(looking at the crime scene): I thought this only happened in the movies. (edit) Donna Basset's police badge has her rank listed as 'Detective'.

In the San Francisco Police Department, the usual title for a detective is 'Inspector'. (edit) Grissom states that 2500 left-handed people die every year using objects intended for right-handed people. (edit) The effects of smoking Fry sticks or marijuana dipped in embalming fluid can include, at lower doses, the following.

Embalming fluid can numb pain (physical and mental), produce a feeling of euphoria, and induce mild hallucinations. Negative effects like headache, depression, and disturbed vision can last a day or longer. At high doses people tend to react the same way as they do on PCP. They are usually highly disturbed because they were not aware that the drug they consumed contained PCP, and they do not like the feeling. (edit) Nitpick:
When Sara arrives at the chainsaw massacre, she opens the door (which had been forced) with ungloved fingers. (edit) In the first chapter "American Beauty", when the Asian player is talking to the CSI, you can clearly see the head of an audio operator in the lower left corner of the screen. (edit) Embalmy Day shows that sometimes murder has no purpose or meaning, other than itself. (edit) Goof: In chapter four of this episode, as Grissom says "was attacked from the front", you can clearly see the actor playing the chain saw victim Lou Beitran, breathing whilst on the autopsy table. Also, the monitor above the table shows the victim's head turned to the right, whereas he is actually facing forward. (edit) David Phillips is getting married in 3 weeks (21 days). (edit)

The concept of the victims in the morgue telling the story of their death came from a Billy Wilder movie called Sunset Boulevard. It starts with William Holden already dead, speaking to the audience. There was a scene cut from the final film where they take him to the morgue and he and the other bodies wake up and start talking to each other about the ways they died. (edit) Brass: So you believe in all this Feng-Shui stuff?

Brass is talking here about the ancient practice from China of placement and arrange of space which is claimed to achieve harmony with the environment. This practice is considered supersticious by the skeptics. (edit) Catherine: A rose petal. A true American Beauty.

American Beauty
This is a reference to the 1999 drama film written by Alan Ball directed by Sam Mendes and with the performances of Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening.
This drama explored themes of love, freedom, self-liberation, the search of happiness and family against the backdrop of modern American suburbia.

An American Beauty is also a type of rose.

Catherine could be referring to either or both the movie or the rose type. (edit) Warrick: If he's lying, someone should present him an Emmy award.

William Petersen was a presenter at the 2006 Primetime Emmys. The Emmys are an awards show that honors television shows and their cast and crew. (edit) Chapter 4's title, The Nevada Chainsaw Massacre, is an obvious reference to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It was an infamous horror movie about a chainsaw-yielding cannibalistic serial killer made in 1974 and remade in 2003. A prequel to the 2003 version, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is coming out this year (Oct, 06). The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is also based on true events. (edit) Dividing the episode into chapters is possibly an homage to famed Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino. Some of Tarantino's movies like Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill series are divided into different chapters, with accompanying title cards that are similar to the ones in this episode. Tarantino directed the season 5 finale, "Grave Danger." (edit)
