Venetia Aldridge QC agrees to defend Garry Ashe when he is accused of the murder of his aunt - an oppurtunity for her to triumph in her already distinguished career. But, only four weeks later, she is found murdered and Commander Dalgliesh is called upon to investigate, and he discovers numerous motives for her murder, before a second murder occurs.
