Willie Dante (Howard Duff) was a one time gambler and high roller, who is now the owner of "Dante's Inferno", a San Francisco nightclub.

Though he claims his old persona is behind him, many, including the police and the local crooks, think his shady days aren't over with yet, especially the way things keep happening at the Inferno.
