Saturday Night Live creator will discuss his long and varied career; Chappelle will chat with Maya Angelou.
Sundance Channel will feature legendary SNL creator Lorne Michaels and almost-legendary comedian Dave Chappelle in season two of its series Iconoclasts. The talk show pairs two notable personalities in intimate conversation.
Michaels, who guides the NBC sketch comedy show to its 32nd season this fall, will sit with musician Paul Simon. Simon and Michaels have worked together before--Simon & Garfunkel were the musical guests for the second episode of SNL in 1975.
At the recent TV Critics Association press tour, Michaels spoke about SNL head writer Tina Fey's departure from the show and network president Kevin Reilly's comments about a "tightening of the cast."
"When Chevy Chase left...we had a really tough transition with Bill Murray because the audience wasn't there and the critical establishment wasn't there. But people rise to the occasion," he said. "So I think that Tina disappearing is a huge hole in the writing staff...and I think people will have to step up."
Chappelle will be paired with Dr. Maya Angelou, acclaimed author of IKnow Why the Caged Bird Sings. Last spring, Chappelle torpedoed his popular Comedy Central TV series Chappelle's Show by dropping out of sight for several days. He later turned up in South Africa.
The second season of Iconoclasts kicks off on October 26 with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder paired with surfing legend Laird Hamilton. Also coupled up for this season will be singer Fiona Apple with rock-em sock-em moviemaker Quentin Tarantino, and famed dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov with pioneering California chef Alice Waters.
