LATEST NEWS!

The truth is out there, and agents Mulder and Scully will set out to find it July 25 on the big screen.

For a group known for uncovering secrets and conspiracies, the X-Files team did a pretty good job of keeping their own out of the limelight. However, the sheet has finally been pulled off the long-in-the-works X-Files movie sequel, and 20th Century Fox has announced a release date for the film.

Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder will return to the big screen on July 25, 2008, in a paranormal thriller featuring a standalone storyline, says Variety. The movie has yet to be titled, but will begin shooting in Vancouver, British Columbia, next month.

X-Files creator Chris Carter will direct, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as Mulder and Scully, respectively. Carter and X-Files scribe Frank Spotnitz wrote the screenplay, and both will produce.

The fate of the sequel has long been the subject of rumors and Internet speculation. The flame was reignited when Duchovny said in July that he was about to read the sequel's script and that the movie was moving forward.

The X-Files ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002 on Fox, and is one of the most successful science-fiction television shows in history. The X-Files movie was released in 1998 and grossed almost $200 million worldwide.

I'm not sure how this is going to turn out after so much time especially considering how convoluted the storyline got when Duchovny left (I hated Dogget) but I'll definitely be buying my ticket on opening night. Duchovny has proven with Californication that he still has a fantastic charisma and wit and I look forward to seeing him paired up with Gillian Andersen again. They were such a great team. Thanks to Chris Carter for keeping the dream alive.

wait, a "standalone" story?? I dunno about that. As much as the overall arc got convoluted and a little bit cheesy, especially near the end of the series, it feels like they kind of need to continue that, not leave that huge cliffhanger unanswered and use a two hour feature to go ghost hunting.

This is great news. The first movie was never going to be enough for a franchise that went on for nine seasons. I hope the acting/storyline are superb. I live in the UK so it will probably be next fall/winter before we get to see it. I'll keep checking TV.com for storyline secrets.

Finally! I saw the headline "X-files film offically dated." And I all but freaked. I thought this was going to a bad article and talk about how 'past it's prime' X-files is. Now,I'm breaking out my old "I want to Believe" poster and camping out, rewatching all my DVD's. WHOO!!!I miss you X-FILES!!!

SNOOZEFEST!!!!! 10+ years of waiting since the series goes off the air, and what do we get... A filler episode that is turned into a movie! If they are going to make a series of movies from this show that will be successful, they should deal with the mythology. If they want to do movies that don't have anything to do with the mythology storyline, they should make them for TV so I don't have to pay $10 to watch a television show on an over-sized screen. I've loved this show from the beginning too, but be honest with yourself, weren't you just tolerating the filler (stand-alone) episodes because you knew the next mythology episode was going to be great.

Brilliant news! I loved all nine seasons of the show (and unlike many fans I really enjoyed the last couple of seasons). Any news on any other cast members? I wonder if they would bring Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) back for this film? But surely Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) would be in this film? He'd have to be!

"The first movie grossed almost $200 million" Ouch. These days that's not enough to ensure a sequel. The Transformers movie COST 175 million just to make. I hope Mr. Carter plans to scare the crap out of everyone or this may be the last film. Since it will be a standalone feature anything is possible. Please be original. I'm so sick of the current film industry's lack of ideas leading to remake after remake and when that doesn't work they just dust off another terrible comic book and say, "Hey, let's waste tons of money on this by making a movie out of it." I've seen every episode and will be waiting for what happens next. Aliens still scare the piss out of me!!
