Cain was born to Sharon Thomas(actress) and Roger Tanaka(U.S. Army Servicemen) in Mt. Clemens, MI. Divorcing before he was born, his mother moved him and his brother Roger to Malibu, California after marrying director Christopher Cain. A half sister, Krisinda Cain, followed soon after. His name comes from his step-dad but his looks from his Japanese, Welsh, and French heritage.
Dean went to Santa Monica High School along with a few other future actors such as Rob and Chad Lowe, Sean and Chris Penn, and Emilio Estevez. Graduating an honor student, he turned down 17 athletic scholarships to attended Princeton University where he set two N.C.A.A. records as a first string football player (for the most interceptions per game in a single season and most per game in a career). He graduated in 1988 with a B.A. in history and a contract for the Buffalo Bills as a free safety. Unfortunately during pre-season camp he injured his knee which brought his football career to an end. With sports in his past he turned to screen writing and finally acting and appeared in dozens of commercials.
In 1993 after guest spots on Grapvine, A Different World, and Beverly Hills 90210, he landed the memorable role of Superman in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and actually wrote two episodes (Season's Greedings and Virtually Destroyed). Lois and Clark ended in 1997 and a year later in 1998, he started his own production company Angry Dragon Entertainment which produced the television series Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Also that year he stared in his first major role playing an ex-Green Beret in Best Men. Since then Dean has been featured in many films such as Firetrap and Out of Time along with dozens upon dozens of TV shows most notably Las Vegas and Lost.
