The episode begins with a flashback to the year 2007. Back then, Roger informed both Near and Mello about L's death. Mello immediately became hysteric, wondering how L died and immediately realized that he was killed by Kira. Mello's little outburst came to an end when he heard Near unscrambling his puzzle back onto the floor. Near then tells the two that unless they win and solve the puzzle, they are nothing more than loser. Mello tried to ignore the boy and instead asked Roger which one of them was chosen by L to succeed him. Unfortunately L didn't have the time to choose so Roger wanted Mello and Near to work together. Mello refused and told Roger that he and Mello don't get along. In the end Mello made a decision to let Near to be L's successor. He told the old man that unlike him, Near will do the job calmly without emotion-- like solving a puzzle. Mello also told Roger that he's leaving the orphanage since he's already 15 years old and is independent enough to live on his own.
In the present time, 5th of March, 2012, Near talks to the President of the United States, informing him of the Higuchi incident and about the existence of a notebook which can kill people simply by writing a person's name on it. That notebook right now is in the hands of the Japanese Police. Near also informs the President that the "L" that currently exists is a false L created by the Japanese Police to avoid disorder. The truth is that the real L is already dead. Because of this, Near and US government establish the SPK, a and secret unit consisting of FBI and CIA agents. Meanwhile, the Japanese Police are gathering at Light and Soichiro's house, and talk about preventing an information leak on the internet of criminals’ names to prevent Kira from killing even more people. Matsuda thinks people who reveal criminals’ names online deserve to die themselves. However, Kira gets information from these people so of course, Kira will not kill them. Misa laughs upon hearing this, calling Matsuda on his contradiction.
Light immediately claims that as long as one does not commit a crime and lead a good life, one might see this as an improvement to society. Ryuk simply chuckles upon hearing Light's self-rationalizing thoughts. Their conversation comes to a halt when Light’s sister, Sayu, arrives home and makes Matsuda blush when Sayu thanks him for taking care of her father. Matsuda tells Sayu that she sure has grown because she used to be so small. Soichiro and his wife immediately tell the pitiful agent that they will not let Sayu marry a plice officer. Matsuda, however, gets his hopes up when Sayu tells him that he is cute and she might have considered going out with him if he were younger. Sayu then tells Light that he should settle down with Misa, since he has fully established himself with a job of his own, getting Misa’s hopes up. Not long after this, Soichiro is informed by Aizawa that the Director has been kidnapped, so the Task Force heads back to the station.
Inside the station, Aizawa informs them that he was contacted 45 minutes ago with the Director's cell phone. Apparently, the kidnapper wants to trade the Director for the Death Note. Light is shocked to hear this and asks his father if the Director knows anything about the Death Note. Soichiro remembers that he never told anyone else outside their group even the Director. The next day, Soichiro is informed that an FBI agent wants to see the Director. The agent introduces himself as John McEnroe and explains that his name is obviously an alias and that his concern is about Kira. Soichiro informs him that the Director is not available and asks the agent to speak to him. McEnroe bluntly tells him that the FBI is not convinced that Japanese Police is capable of handling the matter of the Kira case anymore and wants the Task Force to give the notebook to the more capable hands of the FBI.
Upon hearing this, Soichiro immediately assumes that the FBI abducted the Director, but the agent denies this. Near, who overhears the conversation between the two via McEnroe’s transceiver, asks SPK agent Lester to not inform anyone of the Director’s kidnapping. Meanwhile, inside a warehouse, the Director’s kidnappers tell Mello, the mastermind behind the kidnapping, that the Director has no idea of the notebook's existence. And with L dead, that means that, Soichiro Yagami, Kanzou Mogi, and Touta Matsuda are the only ones who know about it. Mello immediately figures out that there are two notes-- one is with the Japanese Police and another is with Kira Mello makes it his goal to ultimately obtain both death notes. His subordinate agrees that if Mello is right, they will have the power to kill without any potential threat to them. A few days later, Mello finds out from his subordinate that the Director has hanged himself dead. So, Mello sets his targets on finding a new hostage—Sayu Yagami.
At the same time, the Japanese Police are now aware that John McEnroe's real name is Larry Connors. Upon hearing this, Light asks everyone to be careful because although the Director did not know about the notebook, he knew who was working with L. Light's conversation, is interrupted when Misa comes out, wearing only lingerie, to say good night to him, causing everyone but Light to be embarrassed. Light continues, saying that everyone in their family is also in danger. As soon as he said this, Soichiro gets a phone call informing him that the kidnappers now want to exchange the notebook for Sayu's life. In addition to this, they inform him that the Director has died. Soichiro is horrified to hear this and, after making a few phone calls, he realizes that Sayu has been abducted. Light immediately goes on a damage control mode, telling them that maybe Kira was the one who killed the director.
He points out the kidnappers, who want the notebook, will not accomplish anything by killing the director. Meanwhile, Agent Lester informs Near that the Director of the Japanese Police has been murdered. Near asks Lester of the whereabouts of Mello, but Lester can't trace him. This causes Near to wonder if Mello has anything with this. At the same time, the kidnappers call Soichiro, demanding an exchange with the notebook. The Task Force finds that the call was made from Los Angeles. Upon hearing this, Soichiro decides to go to L.A. Meanwhile, Near believes that if Kira was the one who killed the Director, it means Kira has access to the Japanese Police’s information. All of a sudden, they get a phone call from Light (under the alias L), asking for their cooperation in the kidnapping (Light received the agency’s phone number from McEnroe when he talked with Soichiro). In response, Near tells Light that he is happy to meet the 2nd L. Light feigns surprise until Near, introducing himself as N, tells him that he is part of an organization to capture Kira and that he knows the true L has died.
