- In this episode, Lynette obtains a job at the advertising agency, Parcher & Murphy.
"Parcher & Murphy" was also referenced in Some of My Best Friends, a short-lived comedy series which was also executive produced by creator Marc Cherry. edit » - When Betty and Matthew Applewhite take the food into the basement at the end of the episode, the hand that reaches out for the food is light brown. When Caleb appears later on in the series, he is black. edit »
- When Lynette throws the dirty diaper, it hits the glass wall and falls next to the trash can, but when the camera turns to Nina, in the background, the diaper is not there. edit »
- Despite the title of the show being "Desperate Housewives", this episode established that none of the characters are (strictly speaking) housewives at this point. Susan, Edie, and Betty are all divorcees, Bree is a widow and Gaby isn't really a true housewife while Carlos is in prison. Lynette will also be working in an office this season, thus nullifying the label of "housewife". Even Karen McCluskey has been established to be a widow. In fact, (with the exception of Gaby) this pattern will more or less be held for the whole season, making the title a misnomer for Season Two. edit »
- Goof: When Bree and Rex's mother are talking about the funeral, the door behind the Reverend changes from open to closed between shots. edit »
- Star Cody Kasch (Zach Young) and guest star Joely Fisher (Nina) had previously worked together in the short running sitcom "Normal Ohio". edit »
- Mike (James Denton) tells Susan (Teri Hatcher) what happened with Mary Alice and Deirdre and also that Zach might be his son. edit »
- Although he is credited and is seen briefly in recap of the episode, Mark Moses (Paul Young) does not appear in this episode. edit »
- Actress Shirley Knight begins her recurring status in this episode as Phyllis Van De Kamp, Rex's mother.
Joely Fisher also begins her recurring status in this episode as Lynette's boss, Nina Fletcher. edit » - Jesse Metcalfe is no longer a full time cast member as he was in the first season of the series. In this episode he his credited as a guest star. edit »
- Bree: Give me your tie.
Tom: What?
Bree: Give me your tie!
Lynette: Give it to her! Give it to her! edit » - Gabrielle: So you're just not gonna talk to me, is that it? Fine. I don't need to talk. Okay. Yes, I had a little affair. It wasn't the best thing to do, and I'm not proud of it. But it's not the worst thing that could have happened. Nobody died. Oh, don't be such a martyr, Carlos. Okay, it takes two people. How many times did you go off on your little business trips and leave me alone? See, so technically, you cheated, too. It's just your mistress was your work. edit »
- Lynette: Oh, I have a thousand things to do before that. Borrow a decent scarf from Bree, buy a lipstick I don't hate. edit »
- Lynette: I love you, I love your finger painting, but if you touch me with those messy hands, I will cut them off. edit »
- John: So what, you don't love me?
Gabrielle: Well, up until the point that you told my husband we were having an affair, I was quite fond of you. Since then, not a fan! edit »
- This episode title, "Next" takes it name from the Stephen Sondheim song "Next" from the Pacific Overtures. edit »
