One Wonderful DayEpisode Number: 23 Season Num: 1 First Aired: Sunday May 22, 2005 Prod Code: 122 |
Gabrielle, Susan, and Lynette rush to the hospital in the middle of the night after receiving a phone call from Danielle telling them about Rex's heart attack. Bree confides that she feels guilty because she and Rex were having a fight when he had his heart attack and that now he needs a pacemaker. Before his operation, Rex apologizes for being a bad husband. After not getting any better, the doctor suggests to Rex that maybe Bree was tampering with his medication. Rex writes her a note telling her that he understands, and then dies not knowing the real truth. Minutes later, a doctor calls Bree to tell her that Rex has died. She numbly sits in her empty dining room, looking at the chair where Rex would normally sit. She goes into typical Bree coping mode by polishing the silver but then she dissolves into heartbroken sobs. Lynette's marriage takes a dramatic turn after an upset Tom, who accidentally quit his job under false pretenses due to Lynette's manipulation, vows that it is now her turn to go back to work and he'll be staying home with the kids. And Lynette may just take his offer. Carlos finally learns that John and Gabrielle have been lovers for a while, and vows revenge as he is carted off to jail. Mike takes Paul out to a deserted quarry, intending to shoot him. After realizing it's about Dierdre, Paul reveals why Mary Alice killed herself: a drugged-out Dierdre sold them her baby to feed her habit. They fled Utah and changed their names, but she still found them. Mary Alice killed Dierdre by accident when she came to forcibly take Zach/Dana back from them and they hid her body where they thought it would never be found -- in a toy chest buried under their new pool. In the end Mike doesn't kill Paul, but goes home where Zach is waiting for him, while pointing a gun at Susan.

Mary Alice: It was five o'clock in the morning on Wisteria Lane when the phone calls started. Of course, each of them knew something was wrong from that first ring. After all, it's one of the unwritten rules of suburbia, don't call the neighbors in the middle of the night unless the news is bad. And so they came with their uncombed hair and their unmade faces. They came because after all these years, they were no longer just neighbors.

Mary Alice: My name is Mary Alice Young, and before I died, my life was filled with love, laughter, friendship, and, sadly, secrets. The secrets had begun fifteen years earlier when my name was Angela Forrest, and I was living a life of quiet desperation. I'd feel it every morning as I made breakfast for my husband. And during the errands I ran in the afternoons. Even at my work every evening. To me, each day was gray and meaningless. And then one night, suddenly, there was color.

(Bree is polishing silver when the phone rings.)
Bree: Hello?
Dr. Craig: Bree, it's Dr. Craig. I'm at the hospital, and I'm afraid I have some bad news.
Bree: Oh?
Dr. Craig: Rex passed away about ten minutes ago.
Bree: But his operation, it's not until tomorrow.
Dr. Craig: I know. He just didn't make it. I'm so sorry. We did everything we could. Bree?
Bree: Yes, of course you did. Thank you very much for calling.
(Bree slowly hangs up the phone. She walks into the dining room and finishes polishing the silver. She closes the box and puts it on the shelf. She walks to the table and straightens the tablecloth. She sits down and, looking at the empty chair across the table from her, begins to sob.) (edit) Susan: Now, you be a good boy, Bongo, or you're gonna go to bed hungry. (edit) Carlos: Gaby, thank God you're doing this. Beating up a second gay guy? It looks bad.
Gabrielle: Yes. Well, Carlos, in some circles, beating people up at all is frowned upon.
Carlos: So why'd you change your mind?
Gabrielle: Well, I'm about to be the mother of your child, which means a lot of responsibility and little time for myself. So if I'm gonna get you out of this mess, you have to reciprocate.
Carlos: Okay.
Gabrielle: When the baby cries in the middle of the night, you're gonna get up without saying one word. Doctors' appointments: you're driving. I'm not putting a car seat in my Maserati. And you will also be on bottle duty. That means washing, sterilizing, and filling. That way I'll have some semblance of a life, and then maybe I won't hate you so much. (edit)

Why are the lights in Mary Alice's house on if there is no one there?
(edit)
As Mary Alice is talking she says "It was five o'clock in the morning". Anyway all the houses in the street had the lights on. How is it possible?
(edit)
Brenda Strong (Mary Alice Young) is seen in this episode.

ABC accidentally leaked on their website a photo of a scene that was cut out of the season finale. This photo reveals the Applewhites', the new neighbors', big secret. The network had the photo immediately pulled.

The Grand Jury Scene? Probably a judge would not be officiating at a grand jury hearing and there would certainly not be a "gallery" for John to walk up and deliver his news to Carlos. Grand juries are the most secretive and arcane aspects of our justice system. Grand jurors are permitted to ask questions and there are usually more than 12. Tonight's episode looked like a standard tv court scene, with a judge, a gallery and apparently only 12 silent jurors.
