Ice Age Adventure

The Rulons attack the Dino-Riders' camp just as they manage to successfully reactivate the S.T.E.P. on its new command center. When the victory is about to go to the Rulons, Astra and the commandos transport the S.T.E.P. to the safety of another time. But a miscalculation brings them to the Ice Age and in the middle of a war between some peaceful Cro-Magnons and a greedy tribe of Neanderthals. The commandos now have two missions: help their new allies defeat their enemies, and devise a plan to beat back Krulos's latest attack.

Before Jurassic Park clawed its way into the public eye, the coolest dinosaurs in pop culture were the ones on the late 80's cartoon series Dino-Riders. Airing as part of the Marvel Action Universe, Dino-Riders lasted only 14 episodes but had a very successful action figure line distributed by Tyco Toys. The... more »

Dino-Rider Commandos

Astra: As leader of the commandos, Astra is an elite scientific warrior adept at thinking on his feet. But he can be too confident and independent, forgetting he needs his people’s help as much as they need him. Astra is an educated man who taught at the Valorian University. Although he disagrees with Questar on how to wage war with the Rulons, he has no qualms about obeying his former student’s orders.

Rock: This scruffy commando specializes in mountain climbing and crossing rough terrain. He knows all the mountain paths in the area and is fully equipped with cables and gear that are strong enough to hold his entire band. Rock’s a straightforward guy who follows both Astra and Questar without hesitation or question.

Glyde: Providing the commando's aerial cover is Glyde, who is most at home in the sky. He can wear his glider either on his back or suspended from a cable; while airborne, he fires lasers from the box strapped to his chest. Glyde gets a dreamy air when he talks about flying that sharply contrasts with his discomfort when underground.

Bomba: As the commando in charge of explosives, Bomba loves nothing better than to blow things up loudly. His many bombs and grenades can provide cover for the Dino-Riders, break in or out of Rulon bases, or just plain annihilate stuff. While he loves the fire and noise, he’s very careful with his equipment.

Kameelian: The naturalist and wildlife expert who knows how to blend in with his surroundings in order to do recon. Kameelian’s the “nerd” of the group and occasionally grumbles about doing the commandos’ least glamorous chores. But he’s generally an easy-going guy who’s a great scout and an adept warrior.

Faze: The electronics and artillery expert, Faze’s specialties include cutting through Rulon wires and shooting missiles at the enemy with pinpoint accuraccy. He has a bit of an existentialist surfer mentality that can leave his fellow commandos at a loss. He may seem laid back, but aside from Astra he’s the most eager for action.

Rulons

Krulos: This tyrannical ruler of the Rulon Empire was responsible for conquering thousands of worlds. A frog alien who wears a domed exo-suit to stay in contact with water, Krulos is a powerful being who keeps his minions in line with his strength, ruthlessness, and nasty temper. He is always ready to plunge back into battle atop his pet T-Rex or Triceratops despite repeated failure (which he blames on his commanders). Krulos’s ultimate goal is to capture the S.T.E.P. and return to the future after destroying Questar and the Dino-Riders.

Rasp: One of Krulos’s three main commanders, Rasp heads up the vipers, a race of snake men who are physically weak but universally treacherous. Rasp is both a suck up and a smart aleck, pledging his loyalty to his “great and glorious leader” while muttering snarky remarks under his breath. He’s always trying to step over Hammerhead to become second-in-command. While never gutsy enough to challenge Krulos directly, Rasp would willingly stab him in the back given the chance.

Hammerhead: The head of the shark men in Krulos’s army, Hammerhead is probably the most competent of the three commanders. He’ll stay on Krulos’s good side because of his power, but he’s not afraid to stand up to his leader to a certain extent. Hammerhead is ambitious and has devised several inventive schemes on his own. The two people he hates more than anyone else are Rasp, who is always trying to steal their leader’s favor, and Yungstar, with whom he has an unexplained history.

Antor: This last Rulon commander leads the ant men and is generally the least competent of the bunch. Antor lacks the smarts, creativity, and charisma to advance beyond Rasp or Hammerhead to become the favorite of Krulos. Though he’s had his share of success in battle and would love more power in the Rulon army, he has to settle for venting his frustrations to his bone-headed soldiers. In the end, Antor has learned to keep quiet to avoid being throttled by his leader like his rival commanders.

Skate: He is the squeaky-voiced commander who serves Lord Krulos out of equal parts loyalty and fear. Without more of his kind to back him up, Skate can never quite rise to the same level of assertiveness as the main three commanders. If he’s not careful, then the others will have him take the fall for their own failures.

Krok: The only crocodile alien among Krulos’s minions. Krok’s an extremely loyal commander who won’t tolerate anyone talking back to his mighty leader. While he tends to obey Krulos completely, he’s a hands-on character willing to snatch whatever is at hand in order to advance the Rulon agenda. Krok is more effective paired with another commander than operating alone.

Lokus: Like Krok and Skate, this minor Rulon commander is a unique species on Prehistoric Earth. Lokus isn’t as strong as his more flashy associates, so he makes up for it by showing great attention and concern for whatever project Krulos assigns him. He knows as well as the others that his best chances for a promotion lie in capturing a Dino-Rider.less «

    8 Great

A very short lived cartoon that any kid could ask for! hide « show »

Dino-Riders was a cartoon in the eighties that lasted only fourteen episodes. Unclear why however, with dinosaurs and lasers and spaceships, what else could a kid ask for? This show seems like it was cut in its prime. I did happen to find out that the reason behind this show was to promote a new line of toys. Well toys or no toys this show seems to have followers even today, so the main problem I have is that fact it is so short. the fourteen episodes were very good and I would have loved to see more. well maybe they'll make a movie or something but until then I am glad to have the episodes to watch again and again!

    10 Perfect

Humans living in peace and working together with Dinosaurs while the alien creatures who controlled them did not. It also had like laser guns and such. hide « show »

I don't remember much about it, but I know I loved it. My brother and I watched it all the time. We had the tape and we watched it so much. I guess we lost the tape or it got damaged because I've been looking for it around the house forever. I guess someone threw it away. Sad really. I used to love that movie.

    10 Perfect

This short-lived 80's cartoon combines two critical ideas that every kid loves: dinosaurs and outer space. Time travellers from the future have crash landed onto Prehistoric Earth and are waging war by mounting their weapons and armor on dinosaurs. hide « show »

I love this cartoon. Yes, I am fully aware of how cheesy it is and how dismal the animation and dialogue can be in certain episodes. But this has to rank as one of my all-time favorite cartoons.

As a child, my mother would tape cartoons for us while we were in school. Often she'd watch the shows in order to get rid of the commercials so that we wouldn't have to mess with the remote or the VCR too much (my mom rocks). This cartoon lasted for 14 episodes; my mom taped 12, so we had virtually all of them pretty much in order. I found the other two episodes online a few years ago. And I still watch the whole series at least once a year.

It's so much fun. We have overdramatic bad guys and righteously noble good guys shooting laserfire at each other while riding armored dinosaurs. The characters are types, but they are well-defined and amusing types. You learn lessons every episode, which all good cartoons manage to a certain degree. Good always manages to triumph over evil. Things get blown up pretty much in every episode. And the cheese factor is part of the fun!

There may be better cartoons out there, but few hold as special a place in my heart as Dino-Riders. It's a part of my childhood that I haven't let go of and most likely never will.
