After being abused on several occasions, Dominique broke up the relationship in September 1982 and drove her ex-boyfriend to leave their common home. Five weeks later, on October 30, Dominique was at home, rehearsing a scene for the scifi series "V" together with actor David Packer, when Sweeney showed up and begged for reconciliation. While argueing on the driveway outside, Sweeney suddenly grabbed Dominique by her neck and strangled her for several minutes, and left her in a braindead coma. After nearly five days in hospital, Dominique's parents signed her off the life-support systems and Dominique died instantly on November 4. In 1983, John Sweeney was convicted merely for voluntary manslaughter and he served only 2 1/2 years in prison.
