Douglas Henshall was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 19th 1965. He grew up in Barrhead, South of Glasgow, the youngest of three siblings and only son. He was a pupil at Barrhead High School.
Whilst at High School, a friend invited him to join The Scottish Youth Theatre based in Glasgow. When it was time to leave school, Douglas first choice of career would have been a sports journalist, so that he could commentate on football,but he didn't get the required grades to enter university. He then considered Art College (having obtained Highers in Art and History), but fortunately finally chose acting. He moved to London and trained at Mountview.
After graduating from Mountview, Douglas returned to Scotland where he joined David Hayman's 7:84 theatre company. He performed in The Sash, No Mean City and Road.
Douglas eventually returned to London,England where his extensive theatre work includes The Devil Is An Ass, The Relapse and The Painter of Dishonour for The Royal Shakespeare Company (1995), The Life of Stuff at The Donmar Warehouse (1993) and playing the role of Teach in American Buffalo at The Young Vic(1997).
In the summer of 2002 Douglas returned to the London stage at The Royal National Theatre where he played the role of Michael Bakunin in Tom Stoppard's trilogy of plays The Coast of Utopia:Voyage,Shipwreck and Salvage. The plays ran from August 3rd until November 23rd 2002.
Douglas was also highly acclaimed for his performance as John Proctor in The Crucible at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in February 2004.
Douglas is well known for his many TV roles on British TV. In 2000 he won an award as best actor in a mini series at The Monte-Carlo TV festival for his role in Kid In The Corner as Alex Letts, a father trying to cope with his son who has ADHD. The same year he also won a Palmare for best television actor in the TV series Psychos in which he played Dr. Daniel Nash.
His hobbies include watching and playing tennis " I played tennis morning,noon and night from the age of 10 to about 17". He has said that when Wimbledon is on " then the world stops". Douglas also lists cooking, going to the cinema, playing chess and of course watching football. He enjoys going to football matches at home and abroad and is a supporter of the Scottish football team St. Mirren and the London team Chelsea.
Douglas has said that his personal favourite TV programme is Antiques Roadshow. He also likes Panorama and wild life documentaries.
