Episode Summary

Ben finds that his favorite stuffed animal from his childhood, Bully, has been tossed in the dumpster. Ben immediately blames his father and begins to label all of his possessions; he even labels his labels. Ben starts to fear that his father is going to throw him out of the house like his Bully. Sick of his father playing his folk, blues and "Snoopy Dog Dog" songs, suggests that he should play an open mic night, so that he doesn't play in the house. Ben and Laura go to watch him humiliate himself.

Ray Romano and Joy Behar are the patients this week.

    8.1 Great

Ben goes out with Laura the receptionist while Dr. Katz tries to play rough love with his son by throwing his favorite toy. hide show

Watching the first episodes, you can see why Ben and his Dad have a love/hate relationship. As a know it all shrink, Dr. Katz sometimes though rather hasty and ridiculous things to motivate Ben to do something with his life. Case in point, throwing away one of his childhood toys. When Ben finds out he is quite angered not so much because of the fact that a toy was thrown away but Katz (like many parents do) has committed the cardinal sin of overstepping his boundary with his child.

Ben likes his privacy and so this intrusion by Katz really makes their relationship shaky. It's no wonder that dysfunction seems to run in the family.

Anyways, a lot of comedic moments. Katz trying to sing and talk to his son in public is disastrous. Nonetheless, Laura, finds it attractive that Ben would sit through such a painful experience with his dad. For a moment, Ben gets the attention that he wants from the girl he likes.

    This is a great episode.

  • Ben: Hey, let me ask you a question. This is pretty good. We're sitting together at a table and we both ordered the same drink. This is kind of… does this in any way resemble to you, like a date?
    Laura: No.
Ben: What would make it more like a date to you?
Laura: If you were a different guy. []
  • Dr. Katz: Ben, have I ever put any pressure on you to leave this house? To move out? To live the life of a young adult? Have I ever suggested that I could use this as my office? And maybe an upright piano.... []
