I worry about this show... hide show
...and here is why:
Its a snapshot at best, of people with or surrounded by some very serious life issues. I understand that it helps fellow sufferers understand they are not alone, and in that there is some good. What is not so good is that there is no resolution by the end of a show because there can't be. Deep seeded issues don't go away over night, sometimes they don't go away at all, and that fact is never properly assimilated by the viewer in this kind of forum.
My objection is that people see this, the same as they do in hour long medical dramas (a fact which never fails to slay me) and think that what Dr. Phil says on TV is the way, the truth, and the light in a simple, condensed format.
The format does not allow the viewer to see the variables, dependent and independent, that can complicate what looks like a problem that's been taken care of in 30 minutes minus commercials, and derail everything that's been done. No fault to Dr. Phil as a man or as a professional. I like his no B.S. approach and I imagine he treats his private patients with the same therapeutic techniques. He's not trying to nor stating that he will, cure the people he sees on his show, but the PROBLEM is that the viewer thinks he is or will.
Despite what they've been told and against all common sense, most viewers believe what they see to be "the way" its done; the absolute and irrevocable truth and fact, and nary a glitch will occur. And all will be right with the world because it happened that way on TV.
Wrong. Sadly, often very wrong...
I used to be a big fan, however, now I only watch occasionally … if I have absolutely nothing else to do, if there is nothing else on and/or if I have a few minutes to kill. What I find most annoying about the show is the way it is 'shot' … after he introduces a guest, then you see flash backs of their situation and/or their comments … these 'flash backs' seem to be caught in a 'loop', as they repeat over and over and over again throughout the entire show … plus the movement of the camera --- back and forth --- gives me migraines! I did watch part of the show today. My comment today has to do with the chairs on the set. They look very silly … I could not stop laughing! It looks to me like 'poppa bear and baby bear' chairs … what a MEGA-EGO Dr. Phil has! The guests have to LOOK UP to Dr. Phil … and Dr. Phil LOOKS DOWN on them in that little chair, like they are little children being punished.
Overall very informative with real life experiences that so many people experience -(I hate reality TV because it is so false but this is real life reality) - with a purpose that helps the people involved and many many viewers. hide show
For the most part I look forward to the show, but must admit I often record so that when there are episodes that I can't get into I can fast forward or delete. Unfortunately these deleted ones are the 'tabloid' type episodes that crept in too frequently last season - and these are the ones I can't stand, remind me of the sensationalist talk shows that only want to expose not solve issues. His overall work in bringing so many current issues to the fore front and having the courage to tell some obnoxious characters the truth is refreshing- but he does qualify this with the offer of genuine help.He is not afraid to raise issus that are generally swept under the carpet and the level of real help that is given is commendable.
By raising all these issue and ofering sensible advice he not only helps the people on the show but gives sage advice for people in similar circumstances. Wish he would come to Australia and do a series of shows- we have some issues that need exposure.
He brings people that have problems on to his show to make money and the people never actually resolve anything on the show he just says "ok and how does that make you feel" they will give him an answer and he will say " ok ok we are making great progress here" and some people will cry and then he'll say "when we return from the break find out how i helped this lady lose to pounds in a year !" .. . so there you have it a full episode of doctor phil so dont bother watching it. yep
Great show on hording. Please do another show when you clean out her house. hide show
Please do another show on the lady who buys everything and all that food and lives in filth. I felt so sorry for her children and wonder why no one has gotten sick. I am an animal lover and was surprised to see even though she had all those cats that she got some dogs. This qualifies for animal abuse. I hope she and her partnet got the help they need as I am sure he is drinking again and that was a violation of his probation. Even though he has been abusive to her I understand where she might stay with him because she needs his income. It is very sad. I have never seen anything like it.
