It has to be one of the most effective and popular of all time. It's just so well identified with this show. I can't think of many that have had even a similar impact.
When I was a kid I had a hard time believing that wasn't what they played when you called a real police station.

According to The Complete Directory Of Prime Time Network TV Shows (Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh) it was the most famous four-note introduction since Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. It dates back to the radio version, which started in, I think, 1949. It has become an anthem for situations that appear ominous, or for impending trouble .

The theme was composed by Walter Schumann and he named it Danger Ahead. The radio series ran from June 3, 1949 until the show came to TV on December 16, 1951.

Actually, the radio series lasted for several years after the TV series made its debut. The radio version lasted until 1956, so for five years fans were treated to a double dose. Many radio shows continued even after they went to television, since TV was a fairly new phenomenon and only a relatively few people had TV sets. Burns and Allen was an exception. The radio show was discontinued when they went to TV in 1950.

You are correct. The raido episodes did run with new episodes until the first part of 1956. The rest of 1956 and until February 1957 the episodes were in repeats. I found this on the web site Badge714.com.
