What are some dark dramas such as Dexter, Harper's Island, and The Mentalist that actually have an arc of a plot, not episodes that resolve themselves.

    Breaking Bad!

Apparently it is rather popular. I watched the first couple episodes of season one, and quit. I am not at all squeamish, but after the "bathtub" scene, and the scenario surrounding it (I won't include a spoiler), I had had enough. It's a sick show. Maybe since then they have changed the tone, I don't know. Neither do I care.

Not that its intended to last as a series, but I think "The Philanthropist" qualifies...

Nip/Tuck is dark although I've stopped watching. The first seasons were pretty good, though.

Durham County is a pretty dark drama so is Dead Like Me. I think The Shield should qualify as well.

Profiler (1997 - 2000) about an FBI profiler that works for the FBI catching killers / serial killers ... the show had a great ongoing arc for them tracking one serial killer that is introduced early in the show and I think ran late into the 3rd season (the show lasted 4 seasons).

Ditto for The Profiler and American Gothic.

I also recommend Supernatural, Criminal Minds and True Blood.

24... no other show where anyone can die at any time and the entire story arc takes the season with no stand alone episodes to speak of.
