Peters on Owen Marshall, Counselor At Law

3-19-1974
Birthplace:
Staten Island, New York, USA
Birth Name:
Edward Clifford Platt
AKA:
Edward C. Platt, Ed Platt
Edward Platt also credited as Edward C. Platt was born in Staten Island New York on February 16th( the Air Corp allegedly put down the 14th on his ID and he never changed it;he did celebrate it on the 14th)but he spent some of his childhood with family in Kentucky and in upstate New York where he attended the private Northwood school. He was a member of the ski jump team.
After graduating, Ed attended Princeton where he majored in romance languages. His father wanted him to be a stockbroker, his mother dreamed he'd be an opera singer since he had a beautiful baratone voice. Ed left Yale for the Conservatory of Music in Cinncinati and finally the prestigious Julliard. After his schooling, Ed joined on as a bass singer in Happy Fenton's band and later the Paul White Orchestra. He also served his country, spending 4 years in the Army Air Corp as a radio operator.
He found vocal work in several operettas around New York and found radio work where he reportedly was a character on The Greatest Story Ever Told. One operetta opened and closed the same night, another show, Mikado, "bombed" litterally as it premiered a few days after Pearl Harbor. While on the New York stage, Ed met actor Jose Ferrer who used him in at least 6 shows including The Shrike and Stalag 17. Jose even had Ed re-create his role of Harry Downs(brother to Ferrer's character) for the film version of The Shrike in 1955. It was Ed's first Hollywood Film. A few years before this, Ed had moved to Texas to be near his brother and earned 65 dollars a week hosting and producing a kiddie show called Uncle Eddie's Birthday Party. He also reported the local news, which consisted of what the garden club was up to. When he finally got the call for Hollywood he did very well, appearing in about 40 films in his first 5 years. He's fondly remembered for the tough but compassionate Detective Ray Fremick the juvenile officer overlooking James Dean's Jim Stark character in Rebel Without A Cause. This role caught the eye of Get Smart Producer Leonard Stern. When he called Ed in for an interview, Ed belted out Old Man River showing that if he could do that in a first time meeting he could handle comedy. Ed, being interviewed in a 1960's TV Magazine, said he had always dreamed of working on a show like Get Smart. There are also funny stories that during season 1 Ed went to the Kentucky Derby and an entire section of the crowd stood up and yelled "Sorry About That Chief." Other stories talk about Ed getting bumped into so people could use the famous line. Just after Get Smart, Ed appeared in a few episodes of another Leonard Stern show: The Governor And JJ where he played a neurotic politician named Orrin Hacker. Once again, Ed proved he could do comedy very well. In 1973, Ed turned to producing because he wanted to make a film with character that the whole family could see. The end result was Santee, a western starring Glenn Ford.
It wasn't what the 70's crowd wanted now that Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name had become so popular. Sadly, just after the film, Ed died. His last TV appearance was in the pilot movie for the NBC show The Snoop Sisters(aka Femme Fetales) which was produced by Get Smart's Leonard Stern. It starred Mildred Natwick and Helen Hayes as crime solving sisters before Jessica Fletcher had even come on the scene. The show rotated as part of NBC's mystery movie lineup.
Ed Platt has one daughter, from his first marriage and two sons and a daughter from his second marriage. In 1989, ABC aired the reunion film Get Smart Again, which was dedicated to his memory.
