Eli has signed a DNR order in his living will. However, except for the surgery scene, he is not connected to a respiratory device in which the DNR rule applies. He only has a small tube of running oxygen which does not interfere in his own breathing activity. (edit)

Eli: How do I get out of here? Do I, uh, take a red pill or, you know, get Scotty to beam me up, or...
In the film The Matrix, Neo first leaves the Matrix by taking a red pill. Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott is the Chief Engineer on the original Star Trek series; he operates the transporter system, "beaming" people to and from the Enterprise. Dr. Chen paraphrases Mark 8:36 in the New Testament which reads: "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (edit) Eli: I'll miss you most of all, Scarecrow.
