Notes

add »
In 1996, Jonathan Cake and Ciaran Hinds appeared in the British scifi mini-series Cold Lazarus. While Jonathan Cake plays Tyrannys, Caesar's trusty gladiator on Empire, Ciaran Hinds plays Caesar himself on the other, more successful 2005 series about ancient Rome, HBO's Rome. (edit)
Initially, six episodes of this limited-run series were ordered. Later the order was increased to eight, and then back to six episodes, due to cost issues. (edit)
A fire at Roma Studios destroyed the set and production equipment on July 21, 2004. (edit)
The series was shot in Italy at the same time as Rome. (edit)
In the scene where Tyrannus fights to free his son Piso from kidnappers in an underground temple, Jonathan Cake (Tyrannus) got cut by a sword. The cut quickly became infected and he had to have it checked up at a hospital. (edit)

Quotes

Cicero: Reason has abandoned this place. (edit)
Caesar: (to Brutus) And you, my child? (edit)
Camane: (voiceover) Not since Alexander the Great has such a burden been placed on the shoulders of one so young. And all the world hinges on the outcome. Watch over him, sweet Vesta, for the trials of Octavius have begun. (edit)
Caesar: No. Not Antony. Octavius. My sister's boy. He will save the dream of Rome, Tyrannus. (edit)
Caesar: And what do you know of real battle, Octavius?
Octavius: I've studied. (edit)

Trivia

add »
Historical Inaccuracies / Creative Freedom:
- Armed soldiers were not allowed in the city proper until after the formation of the Empire in 27 BC.
- Caesar never traveled in a chariot except during his triumphs.
- Wheeled vehicles were only allowed in the city proper after dark.
- Caesar was killed on the steps of the Temple of Bellona outside the city boundary and not inside an actual session of the Senate.
- An actual Senator would never bend his knee to Caesar who, while he was the Dictator, was also a Senator. The Senator would have considered himself Caesar’s equal.
- Outside the Arena, Tyrannus would never have had access to his sword. Paid body guards carried clubs. Only lictors could have weapons. Caesar would have had 24 lictors as Dictator. He had dismissed them on the Ides.
- By being in Rome, Marc Antony would have taken off his military uniform and put on his purple-striped toga for a meeting of the Senate (of which he was a member).
- Atia, Octavius' mother, was actually Caesar’s niece. Atia’s mother was Caesar’s sister, a Julia (as were all the women of his direct line). (edit)
