Abby: Drives Maggie to the train station. Maggie tries everything to convince Abby to let her stay, to no avail. Abby drops her mother off in the rain and goes to the ER. Maggie comes to the ER and waits in chairs while Abby ignores her. The two of them go outside in the rain and have a screaming match with Maggie begging to stay and Abby having none of it. When there is an explosion, Abby is involved and Carter brings her out of the fire. After he pronounces a clean bill of health for Abby, she takes Maggie home.
Elizabeth: Starts the day with a summons. She is being sued for malpractice over the surfer. Romano tears her a new one, (because he is also named in the suit) and tells her not to discuss the case with anyone. Elizabeth later gets sick during a trauma and practically pukes on a patient. Her pregnancy test comes back positive.
Mark: Starts feeling disoriented in the middle of an examination. Goes to get himself examined and has a CAT scan done. They find a mass on his brain and he is told to see a neurosurgeon. Though Elizabeth tells him of her impending pregnancy, he does not tell her about the tumor.
Carter: Misdiagnoses a man as a drug seeker. The patient actually has a massive blood clot in his knee. Carter and Luka argue over it because Carter is sure of his diagnosis, and Luka doesn’t trust it.
Kerry: Rushes out of the ER for a meeting with Kim, the psychiatrist from the last few episodes. They share a warm and friendly dinner. Kim jokes that this is their second date. Kerry responds that she knows Kim is gay, but she is straight. Kim apologizes for misunderstanding. Kerry waves it away, distracted, saying “I never thought about it.”
Benton: Opens the episode singing with his son. He tries to comfort Jackie without much success. He then treats a woman with end-stage breast cancer who can’t get the meds she needs because the pharmacy is closed. Because of her HMO, Peter can’t treat her the way she should be treated. Later, en route to Cleo’s family, he and Cleo argue due to their differing views on race.
