Abby is flabbergasted when Maggie reveals her plans to move back to her birthplace of Minneapolis. Abby reveals to her mother that she was pregnant once, but had an abortion, scared about the genetic possibility of herself or her child turning out bipolar. Meanwhile, Carter and Chen are both shot down in their bids for chief resident, after which she tells Weaver she is a victim of discrimination. Weaver meets Legaspi's new girlfriend. Carla hits on Benton and freaks out at Cleo after she turns her back on Reese for a second and he injures himself. Mark treats a young abused boy with an extremely irate father. When Luka and Kerry were outside talking, and waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Luka had on latex gloves. And he was leaning up against the rail holding on to it. Since he is a doctor wouldn't he know not to hold on the rail with sterile gloves. edit »

Maggie: ...Why don't you invite Luka to dinner?
Abby: He's playing softball.
Maggie: That sounds like fun. Are you going to go?
Abby: I don't play. Umm (pauses) The reason why I ran out today like that is because, it's just, uh... it's scary to hope too much, you know?
Maggie: Yeah, I know. I know I might not make it, but Abby, something happened to me in that ICU room. I realized, I don't want to die, and more than that, I don't want my little girl to watch me die. I can't do that to you, not ever! That's what I wanted to tell you today. I'm going to handle my life and I want you to get on with yours.
Abby: Okay. (she turns away)
Maggie: You can't put your life on hold anymore.
Abby: It's not on hold.
Maggie: What do you mean? You won't even go play softball with your boyfriend.
Abby: So? I don't want to play.
Maggie: Stop setting things out, Abby!
Abby: I don't!
Maggie: Yes, you do! You can't use me as the reason for not doing the things you want do in life. Go to medical school.
Abby: Well, that's not so easy.
Maggie: Get married.
Abby: I was married.
Maggie: Get pregnant.
Abby: I was pregnant!
Maggie: What happened?
Abby: What happened! (they sit) I had an abortion. Some people aren't meant to be mothers.
Maggie: Abby, I was a lot younger than you are now when I had my first manic episode. I watched you since you were a little girl. You're not bipolar.
Abby: No, but my kids could be.
Maggie: But they might not be. They could be anything and you'll just love them, that's all! You never even told Richard, did you?
Abby: No. I think that was the beginning of the end for us. We just stopped talking about everything. I just was too scared. I couldn't risk it. I didn't want to...
Maggie: Turn into me?
Abby: Yeah.
Maggie: Or have to end up taking care of another me? (Abby nods and cries) Oh, honey! Oh, sweetie! (they hug) That's all that is, it's risk. You just have to take the chance and leap into life, otherwise, sweetheart, you're going to miss out on a lot of great things! Abby, you deserve all the great things. Do you hear me?

Luka: You don't have to be great, it's just for fun.
Abby: Actually, I happen to play very well.
Luka: So go, it'll be good for you.

Luka: I don't. I'm last in the batting order.
Maggie: You should put Abby up. She was an all-star in her little-league team.
Luka: How about you?
Maggie: I'm just gonna watch.
Luka: (To Abby) All-star?
Abby: I like you in that hat.
Luka: Almost look American, huh?
