Ray gets to use the "active listening technique" he and Debra learned in parenting class on his parents when their stubbornness goes too far. Ray doesn't realize how much he's mastered the technique learned in class until he uses his skills first on his parents and then on Ally, both with surprising results.

Frank: I have to go to Grandparenting class at four. Today we're learing "Got your nose" and "Pull my finger."
Ray: Don't forget about the seminar about moving to Florida. (edit) Ray: Listen, Ally, I mean it. If you don't pick up your toys in three seconds, there's no TV for a week!
Frank: Geez!
Robert: Wow. (edit) Debra: Ally, I'm not gonna tell you again. Pick up your toys.
Ally: No.
Debra: Then you can just forget about dessert.
Ally: I don't want any stupid dessert.
Frank: Sure you do. (edit) Teacher: Do you always threaten?
Ray: No, sometimes she yells.
Debra: Ray! (edit) Ray: Look, it's grandma's birthday, there aren't gonna be many more of them. (edit)

Prior to bringing Ray up for the role-playing exercise, the parenting teacher erases a circled phrase from the chalkboard. Throughout the scene, the chalked circle flips several several times between being totally erased and having a faint outline left over.
