The opening scene gives us insight into the hectic home life of Ray and Debra Barone with their three young children. Phones ring, food flies, and children scream. Ray calms the children down by giving them cookies and finally gets to say hello to Debra. The opening credits begin.
Ray has just returned from a 4-day business trip; just in time for Debra's upcoming birthday. Debra wants a quiet birthday celebration, which also includes Ray's parents not coming over. Debra tells Ray about how Frank and Marie "dropped by" every day he was gone, and just as Ray says Debra is blowing things out of proportion, Marie barges in the front door.
Debra admits she's stressed out because of the kids and Ray's parents, so Ray tells her to go out for the night while he stays home and takes care of the children. His friend Leo stops by to see if he wants to go out, but Ray continually declines because he wants to keep his word to Debra. Marie drops by again, and tells Ray to go out and have fun and that she'll take care of the children.
While Ray is gone, Frank and Ray's brother Robert stop by. Robert looks at an award Ray won, and delivers the sarcastic yet classic line "Everybody loves Raymond." Ray comes home to see the house is a mess, his parents there and the children are awake. He kicks everyone out, puts the kids to bed and cleans up before Debra arrives. After Debra gets home she finds out Ray's parents had been there because the twins smelled like Frank. Angry, she demands that Ray tell his parents they aren't allowed to come over for her birthday on Sunday.
The next day, Ray goes to his parents house to tell them the news. Marie mentions the fact that the gift box of pears Ray sent her had too many pears for them to eat. Ray tells her he subscribed her to the "Fruit of the Month" club. She and Frank freak out before Ray promises to cancel the subscription. He then lies to his parents about Debra's birthday, saying he's taking her to Bear Mountain instead of having a party.
On Debra's birthday, Ray and Debra begin "celebrating" by making out on the living room couch. Marie, Frank, and Robert come in without knocking and they're surprised Ray and Debra are still there. Ray admits to his parents that he lied, and that they have to chill out or else they can't come over anymore, "not with calling first" anyways. Frank and Marie take it well and they leave, as well as Robert. Ray and Debra get back to "celebrating" on the couch, until their daughter Ally interrupts to ask them what they're doing.
