As Ray and Debra are saying goodbye to Frank and Marie, Robert walks in. He shows off the commendation pin he received at work for perfect attendance. Debra opens up a letter saying Ray has been nominated for "Sports Writer of the Year," which ruins Robert's moment. Ray doesn't think it's a big deal because he doesn't want to get his hopes up.

At the ceremony, he is congratulated by Katarina Witt and Marv Albert. After the ceremony, Ray and Debra come home with Ray carrying a huge trophy. Ray thinks the fact that he won is too good to be true. He now thinks that since he's won the award, something bad is going to happen. Debra finally gets Ray to admit that he's a pessimist.

The next day Ray tries to be more positive about everything. He tells Debra that he received a promotion at work. He goes over to his parent's house and they don't seem impressed by his achievements. Ray goes home to find out his editor wants him to cover a story in Alaska. Ray then converts back to his old, pessimistic self.
