Ray: Here it is! I was waiting all day for bad news! Come here my old friend! (edit) Ray: Of course she's gonna say she likes my work. She's a skater, dizzy from all that spinning. (edit) Debra: Hey, it's great just to be nominated!
Ray: It's great just to be nominated: that's what losers say. That's the losers' handbook title! (edit) Debra: You say the first thing that comes into your mind when I say, for instance:

Debra: Love.
(Ray pauses)
Ray: Wife?
Debra: Nice answer, but it took a little too long getting there. I could tell you threw out like 15 words before you got to “wife.”
Ray: They all meant wife.
Debra: You’re not supposed to think before you say anything, okay?
Ray: All right. I got it. I’ll try doing it again.
Debra: Okay. Ice cream.
Ray: I thought you were gonna say “love” again. I was ready for “love.”
Debra: No. It’s different words, Ray.
Ray: All right. Go ahead.
Debra: Ice cream.
Ray: Fat.
Debra: See. Right to the negative.
Debra: Beach.
Ray: Sunburn.
Debra: Marriage.
Ray: Counselor.
Debra: Bad.
Ray: Worse.
Debra: Steak.
Ray: Stroke.
Debra: Sex.
Ray: Twins.
Debra: I think I proved my point. (edit) Debra: You're not happy unless you're miserable! (edit) Ray: I'm a pessimist! That's who I am! It's in my blood! This is where I feel comfortable, oh I'm back!! I'm back! (edit) Debra: What's wrong with winning an award?
Ray: It's too good to be true.
Debra: But it is true!
Ray: Then it can't be good. (edit) Debra: A beautiful, famous skater has just told you how much she loves your work. How can it be better than that?
Ray: I could be single. (edit)

This week's lunch special is a burger and onion rings. (edit) We find out the name of paper Ray works for is the New York Newsday. (edit) On top of winning the "Sports Writer of the Year" award, Ray is promoted to "Head of Sports Features" at work. (edit) Robert gets a commendation at work for three years of perfect attendance. (edit) In both “The Pilot” and “Mia Famiglia” it is seen that Ray receives a lot of awards for his writing, but in “Recovering Pessimist” Ray says he has never won an award. (edit) One of the sports writers up for the award that Ray is nominated for is Chuck Heaton of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Chuck Heaton is in reality the father of Patricia Heaton and is indeed a sports writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. (edit)
